Okay, so I'm looking at two different supplements, one I've used before which is Omega Horseshine and it has sodium selenite. I've also seen a similar product that has selenium yeast, so which one was the better/less toxic sort again? I'm thinking it's the sodium selenite that's the better option, but I could use some clarity here. I think our new hay this year (from a different location than last year's hay) isn't giving Blossom and Dundee the selenium support they need. I've restarted them on fresh ground flax (linseed), but I'd like to give them more support as their hoof walls aren't nearly as thick as they were last year. It's not a top/bottom thing, but a thinning of the hoof wall that's happening

Gosh it's a few years since I went through all of this methodically but I'm pretty sure it's the organic selenium (selenium yeast) which is better for horses - better absorbed and less likely to cause toxicity problems. I discovered our land is extremely short of selenium and since then I've been using a mineral supplement high in organic selenium and also very high in certain other minerals. The improvement in my ponies feet and general health has been really good.

thanks for the help Pam!! I've gone through Sarah's posts about the selenium and she recommended the organic (yeast) type selenium too

Yep-- Sarah found it made a big difference in absorption. I use Horse Tech grass mixture supplement and they add in yeast Selenium and organic E at the amounts I request as my pony does best with (we have NO selenium or E in our hay or grazing).

We also have very low or no selenium or E in our hay and grazing. My feed guy has me feeding Blue Seal Charger, said it covers what we lack above. I have always liked the Blue Seal feeds, always fresh. I'm not sure though if the Charger is too much for the Dales though. Prim gets 2 scoops a day of it, which is 6 quarts, and then a bit of oats on top. She shares with her little colt. The others get 4 quarts a day of the Charger, so two half scoops. Everyone looks VERY healthy if you know what I mean! So I think I need to either lessen the Charger, or switch to something else altogether. They are eating good scond cutting hay as well. Any thoughts? None of the feeds anyone has listed above, are any that I have heard of around here....
