Belle (Aquilasstud Maebelle) had her first foal just after midnight - a long-legged bay colt with 50% Dales bloodlines from his dam, and 25% Connemara, 25% Hanoverian bloodlines from his sire Box Office du Pena. If he has inherited his dad's jumping and dressage abilities, he should make a useful small sports horse around 15hh We have called him Firestar because (i) it's "F" names in France this year, (ii) he was born during an extremely clear, star-filled night, and (iii) we could see Mars weakly glowing firey-red on the horizon as we put Belle into her foaling box for the night. Belle cleansed 2 hours after birth. Firestar is up and galloping, and suckling well. He's quite low on his pasterns but when he fully unfurls, I think his legs will be as long as his mum's already Firestar 20 minutes old : 8 hours old : 8 hours old : Daddy :

.. Dad is lovely too, love his colour. Dad is a sooty buckskin which would have been the icing on the cake if Firestar had inherited that We had a 50% chance of buckskin but I'm fairly sure that Firestar is just bright bay, ie he didn't inherit the cream gene. He looks to have a lot of counter-shading though, so could be a sooty bay? Time will tell

Sooty buckskin genetics does my head in! I'm glad he's a gorgeous bay, and that Belle's come through her first foaling so well As for the new lad and his name I love that cheeky first pic, "Yeah, I'm all that!"

Sure he will be a stunning pony whatever shade he turns into with 2 such handsome parents. Sure his legs will straighten out in a few days. Good luck with him and your other foalings.

Thanks everyone xx Apparently, according to an american friend who breeds Quarter Horses, he may be buckskin She says that buckskin foals can range from light cream to chocolate to bay at birth. Firestar has a weird silver-grey tinge to his bay hairs and is definitely a different shade to the 4 bay Dales foals we have bred - Bryher, Comet, Defender and Equinox - so I shall have to pay for a cream gene test before the Vet comes to register him. £20 from Animal Genetics in Cornwall Today he is practising his 2 best paces - sleep and gallop

Ooh he's so cute!!! I really hope he goes sooty buckskin, or any buckskin! It's one of my favourite colours He's going to be lovely, it's an unusual cross with the Hanoverian, but a great idea! He'll be a great horse!
