but also a very enjoyable one. I met up with Linda at Skellingthorpe woods to enjoy the bluebells and wood anenomes at their best.
It's a 7 mile ride which we've done before but this time we hit an all time record for slowness! Things didn't bode well from the moment I got there, opened the trailer and Harvey got scent of the nearby glue factory. After a lot of huffing and puffing he came out of the trailer but soon relaxed and concentrated on his hay net. Then Linda arrived with Saturn and after the usual picnic we tacked up and set off. As usual Harvey strode out in front at his super fast walk with poor Saturn following behind.
Then the smell from the factory hit us again and Harvey stopped dead and in a blink of an eye manoevered himself behind Saturn. Harvey has got this down to a tee and knows where to position himself so I can't use my legs or whip! Poor Saturn, who was also genuinely frightened of the smell, had to take the lead with a lot of coaxing from Linda and Harvey shoving him on from behind. Every now and then Saturn would look round to Harvey saying "is that enough now, will you take over the lead again please?" only to be ignored by said black pony! It took us 31 minutes to cover the first mile and no thanks to Harvey! Saturn was a star considering how scared he was.
Then, no sooner had we passed a point where Harvey decided it was safe again, he shot into the lead leaving poor Saturn way behind. What a kind, brave pony I own....not! We were both exhausted by the end of the ride but the bluebells, wood anenomes and cowslips were beautiful.
Both ponies enjoying some free grazing at the end of the ride:
