Just had the vet to check Fi (Lowhouses Fiona) who is 2 weeks overdue with her foal by King. She's as fat as a hippo, has an udder running milk, but the vet has confirmed that she's NOT in-foal. Just to add insult to injury, I've been watching her on CCTV every night for a month, and she's been thoroughly enjoying her "mum-to-be breakfasts" She was scanned as holding in-foal with a 40 day old foetus last year, but sometime over the proceeding weeks/months, she's absorbed/aborted the embryo but her body hasn't registered the loss. My vet has never seen such a convincing false pregnancy - trust a Dales to pull it off in such a spectacular fashion

yep violet scanned in foal and had a year of luxury to produce nothing and to add insult to injury she was even in season when the vet confirmed she was empty. Alice has also pulled this trick as some of you witnessed, running milk , huge and empty.

What a shame. Yes, they can be very convincing.
On a slightly different subject - has anyone tried to foster a foal onto a false pregnancy mare. The hormones are obviously thinking there should be a baby, so wonder if their behaviour would accept a foal, and whether their milk would continue to come.

Well I bet that was a shock for you. Amazing really, I have never heard of anything like this. Isn't nature strange sometimes.

It must be a year for diva mares Fiona is most put out that she's been evicted from her foaling-box and is standing at the field gate pleading (ie. yelling) starvation!

The hormones are obviously thinking there should be a baby, so wonder if their behaviour would accept a foal, and whether their milk would continue to come. That's an interesting thought.... I've never tried it, simply because we've been really lucky so far and not needed to find a foster mum for an orphan foal, but I think it would be worth a try if the need arose. At the moment Fiona's milk looks quite thin and watery. It definitely doesn't have the texture or colour of full term milk or colostrum, even though she's 2 weeks past her due date in her "false pregnancy mind". Behaviour-wise, I'm fairly sure Fiona would accept a foal. She's a very feminine and maternal mare and it's quite sad to see her watching and calling to this year's foals Firestar and Flynn, knowing that she won't now have one of her own I think I may move her out of sight of the foals and closer to Wilf to see if he proves an interesting distraction that gets her hormones back on track!

what a shame! I was so looking forward to seeing a little Defender sibling this year. Poor Fi, turfed into the cold, cruel world without a bowl to munch from Will you use her as your riding mare for a time before putting her back into foal? That's an amazing false pregancy!

Will you use her as your riding mare for a time before putting her back into foal? She hasn't been ridden for about 3 years, and she's 19 years old now, so I think it would be a bit of a shock to the system if she had a jockey onboard She is very fat though, so I may do some ride-and- lead drag around the bridleways with Jac (her son) to try and shift some of the phantom baby weight!

LOL, lead and drag... fitting I may have to do the leading dragging Blossom around as well. I brought her in from the field because we have a massive holiday weekend coming up and I don't want them on the field for that. Blossom looked like a whale! clearly the grass is much too rich in there, although she's been pissed at me ever since for bringing her in. I'm sure much of her attitude is sleep deprivation and she thinks her alpha status might stretch to include me. She's not happy with the fact Mummy does not let her have such fantasies I'm sure Fi will enjoy being out and about seeing the world, though, and I'm sure it will help her body recover faster

Oh dear, Fi deprived of her rightful pampering, the poor soul! How could you be so mean as to thrust her out into the cold, cruel world. I just hope she's managing without wasting away. Has she come into season yet?

Has she come into season yet? Yes, but only a short season. She ovulated on day 3 and we missed the moment She's still producing milk and wants to steal Fission from Breanna!
