I used to work at the foot of an American airbase runway. When we rode over the A1 and a plane was coming in we could see the pilots and often waved to each other. It amazed me how quickly new ponies got used to the noisy neighbours.

It is amazing. I once rode out with group\ when we were totally buzzed by low-flying aircraft. I was quite sure we were a: under attack and b: the attack consisted of mowing us down by airplane. My hands on my head (to what--defend myself from an airplane landing on it?) no reins, the pony I was riding carried on with his steady trot. Still have PTS when riding near aircraft but super impressed at pony ability to put it in place and move on. Wish I could! Oh--and same pony later shied dramatically at small pile of earth stolidly sitting there being-- a small pile of earth.

We used to get lots of low flying RAF jets and helicopters over us. It terrified me but the ponies don't seem to bother. Last week 2 four-propellered, very slow planes came over so low I thought they were landing in the horse field. I would love to know what they were. Zelda?........

Quite big. Sort of Lancaster size but they couldn't have been Lancasters.

Good grief that's far too low! It must be the season for low flying aircraft. I fetched in Blossom and Dundee over the weekend after the Coast Guard's helicopter hovered along the river in front of us. I thought at one point they were going to land in the field. They must have been searching for a person along the river, but Dundee was getting far too anxious. I feared he might bolt through the fencing. When I brought them in, I kept shoving mints in his mouth. He began to think the helicopter wasn't so bad and then say, it might be a really good thing, since he only gets mints once in awhile and the helicopter meant he ate half a tube of Mentos while we walked in from the field

We are in a designated low flying area Debbie, they are allowed to go as low as 100ft, I think that plane looks lower than it was tho I cant be sure Speaking of low flying Sara and I had just got Trev in the other night when I looked up and saw a light aircraft heading straight towards us, so low that I thought it was trying to land in the field next to us - it was way below the legal height for private aircraft and of course I had left my camera in the house

I know the feeling. So many times in Missouri I'd be out in the fields with Blossom when some yahoo would fly too low. Where's a camera when you need it? Although to be fair, we only had two problems. One was a crop duster who was illegally going too low over my house and over the town itself. The other was an unmarked black helicopter. I managed to get photos of the helicopter which promptly sent it scurrying away. The helicopter I had a heated discussion with our local police. It was a small community, so I was pretty sure the word would get back to the pilot. The sherriff told me there was nothing he could do. I let him know I would take photos and contact the FAA the next time this guy tried it again. That word got back through the grapevine It's quite different if you hear the engines and know the plane is in distress and is looking for a place to land, though. It can always happen, or pilot error/distress. When I think of all the things that could go wrong, it's a miracle they stay aloft.

We have been getting a lot of low flying aircraft over us this past week, mostly fighter jets, helicopters and chinooks, one helicopter came low over the ponies field trailing a long chain? with about 6 lots of equipment hanging from the chain with a helicopter escort at each side level with the equipment.
We have several airbases in East Anglia and I wonder if they are deploying craft out to the Middle East in response to the Russian situation. Very worrying!!
I am always amazed how it never seems to bother the ponies though.
Years ago I used to live near RAF Lineham in Wiltshire where the Hercules were based and they used to be so low you could see the pilot clearly, we had a lot of RAF personnel in our village and a friends husband who was a load master on chinooks flew just above the roof tops of our road with the doors open waving to the children who all thought it was wonderful, he and the pilot got into serious trouble for doing it though.

I've been wondering the same thing Andrea. I can hear (not see) our fighters doing laps very high altitudes over our house. Normally we don't get the fly boys down here, and I find they often practice with the mountains in our area before being deployed to the Afghan region. I'm wondering if this time is in response to what's happening in the Middle East
