So pleased with little Amba yesterday. M and I spruced her up squeaky clean and tacked up and I got on board!. She was probably slightly overwhelmed by the two of us man handling her into her bridle and how dare we take her away from her haynet!!! Goodness, you just can't get the staff can you Amba!?!
Didn't realise how much we depend on our left shoulder for mounting and dismounting! - poor Amba was super tolerant of me as I landed badly into the saddle as she stood like a rock. We went for a little hack about 10 minutes with M on foot with her walking stick. M commented on how much better her bad hips felt after the walk- so it's a win win situation for all 3 of us!
As soon as I was in the saddle I had forgotten about my shoulder and was just focussing on the riding!- brilliant!
We all came back happy and M took a photo.

Thanykyou, we have been out three times now- all good and positive for all of us.
This morning we took Amba through a large field with sheep and she didn't put a foot wrong and had her little pointy ears forward the whole time!
We did meet a tractor, but is was just as we were pulling back into the gateway- phew! She was nervous of that one, so she has lots of learning to do in that respect, but all good considering!.

Tractors are no problem for Connie no matter how big, but sheep are very scary and might just kill her.
Sounds like she's doing very well, and you're having fun with her.

Gosh this is such brilliant news! I hope you and Amba have lots of fun together and overcome her tractor fears.

Thankyou! She's a little star, Tuesday we rode through a huge ploughed field and then M had to give me a leg-up after we had to literally crawl through an overgrown bridleway gate on our hands and knees (plus Amba!!. Yet again Amba is tolerant of M and I's rather laughable attempt at legging me back up!!
Thursday, just a quickie! Took her down to a bridleway running through a farmyard- brilliant to get young/greenies used to all sorts of scary things. She marched past a huge pile of sugar beet!!.
Ride number 6 planned for tomorrow morning-better get the waterproofs out!

I love reading these updates. I hope you don't get too wet tomorrow. You are braver than me - I'm giving tomorrow a miss and waiting until Sunday to venture out.

I may have to suggest to M a little turnout rug for the girl on wet days as it will make Winter riding a little easier! I measured her this morning and she is a 5ft 6"
Enjoy your venture out this Sunday-weather is set fair for the week ahead!

I think you might find she will be better in a 5'9" and one with a lot of room around the shoulders, because of their big shoulders, chest and barrel I've always found they take a larger size than you think.
My Emerald is 14hh (just) and a chunky build, she is in a 5'9" weartherbeeta freestyle with shaped shoulders which fits her perfectly. Connie is 14.2hh and not so chunky but still has big shoulders and is in the same but 6'0". I find both need to go up a size in rugs which don't allow extra shoulder room, but then they are a bit too long, so I stick with weatherbeeta freestyle now as I know they fit.

Yes possibly the case dalesnfellfan. We can try a couple on and see how they come up size wise.
I like Shires and WBs, they are what I have on my own two mares. LOVE the huge tail flaps on the WB. They both have a WB Landa combo each and I refer to them as their 'extreme weather outfits' !!!
Have heard good reports from the Highland pony people that the Horsewear Amigos are a good generous fit too.
I'm rather skint, so will be browsing Ebay/Preloved for some 2nd hand bargains later.

I also find my Dales take a size larger than I would expect. Harvey is in a 6ft3 in some makes, 6ft in others but measures a 5ft9.

My 14.1hh Native X mare is in a 6ft 3" and she's not chunky- is of a similar stamp to a Connemara!
She's just stretched lengthways with age!
