Jethro has a very heavy winter coat and he gets very sweaty when we go out for a hack or do some work in the school. I want to continue riding him regularly over the winter.Would it be better for him if he is clipped? He is stabled overnight now, because the paddock is water-logged in parts. I wondered about a trace clip? Any advice gratefully received! He has settled down really well and has stopped whinnying for his pals when we hack out by ourselves.

just clip out his gullet if you dont want to rug him. We do two runs up from his chest to under his head then fan out to his chest.

Yes, if you don't want to rug, then a gullet type clip will be OK. If you do need to take more off then you would have to rug. I give Harvey a full clip because he does a lot through the winter. Dolly used to have a trace clip but was rugged through the worst weather. There's a lot of talk lately about how it is better for the pony not to clip but we are on wet, heavy clay and I would never get the ponies clean enough to saddle up if I didn't rug.

Although I am new to Dales, I would also stick with a neck and belly clip for reasons already mentioned. It is what we would do with Amba if she needed it.
We are also on the joyfull heavy clay- I was speaking to my Farrier about it yesterday when I explained how it had taken me the best part of an hour to get 12 legs clean-gah!!!

Thank you all. I may go for the full clip, once I have found a tape measure so I can buy the right size rug! Jethro is so hairy that it is quite a struggle to get him ready to go out. And we do want to have an active winter, weather permitting.

I have just gone for a full clip for Connie (except head and legs) after faffing about for a couple of weeks, we also have an active winter planned.
About 3 weeks ago I gave her a low chaser clip, not much more than bib and belly but she was still sweating quite heavily after an active hack so I converted it into a blanket clip before our PR last week, she still sweated heavily and her sheepskin numnah was soaked. So on Monday I got the clippers out for the 3rd time and took the lot off, result, we went out for a fast hack on Tuesday with minimal sweating and her back was only slightly damp when I removed the saddle so it should help with her tendency to develop blocked sweat glands as well.
In this mild weather I have been taking her rug off during the day if sunny and at night (still out) she has just had a rain sheet on, the first night I did put her medium weight rug on but she was too hot in it next morning, I intend to leave her out all winter provided the field doesn't get too wet, we're also clay, and will just adjust the rugs according to the weather.

I agree with Pam and Andrea - I,ve started with a trace clip, but after 3 weeks of regrowth Bertie still gets very sweaty after a long ride - full clip scheduled this week

I'm wondering whether to clip James this year. The vet was concerned about his lack of weight. Does anyone have an oldy clipped out that isn't in good condition?

I think oldies are often better off clipped out and rugged if they are on the light side. Easier to monitor their condition and adjust feeds/rugs accordingly. Plus some oldies grow an exceptionally thick coat which gets matted and smelly - Winnie was like that in old age.
I've just had Harvey fully clipped out. I know he is only 21 and carrying the right amount of weight but I was shocked at how thick and greasy his coat was and he had become very uncomfortable and itchy.

I think I will have to clip James as he bogged off with me twice on Saturday I took Musk out in the high wind today and the only thing he did was to shy once.....

have done gullet clip on GL--a "go faster' wannabe, but very pleased with it. Leave the bib long hair of heart (and cat hairs) and open up on long run down side of neck below stirrup--strip clip. hard to keep both sides even but quite pleased wit result as pony much cooler out working and easier to cool down once in but still fine for cold weather turn out.

James is sporting a smart but minimal clip - front of neck as far as the girth and a tidy up of his beardy chin so I can find the curb chain. So far he has behaved and he has gained a little weight to boot The lady adjacent to the bridlepath clearly saw us the last time bogged off - bucking as he went - as she mentioned the bucking. She said "HOW OLD!?!"

Glad he's put some weight on, he's obviously still full of energy.
