Whilst I was away at the weekend, the friend whose horse, Maisie, shares Jethro's paddock, got kicked by Jethro as she was checking Maisie's rug in the paddock. Linda, the friend, had been out on a hack with Maisie earlier and had put her back put in the paddock without incident. She then started worrying about whether Maisie might be sweaty under the rug and went back to check it. Jethro was at the far side of the paddock when she went in and she was only aware that he had come up behind her when he landed a kick on the side of her knee. She was badly shocked and it was very lucky that the livery owner and another person on the yard looked after her. The doctor at A and E said that if the kick had been a couple of inches further round the leg she would have had a fractured knee cap. as it was, she had to have some stitches, has a painful leg and some swelling. Jethro is very sociable with humans and loves attention and Linda thinks he was jealous of the attention Maisie was getting.
It it has left me very worried about what he might do and obviously concerned for Linda who has a had a very bad experience. I wonder whether he should be in a roped off section of the paddock by himself.
Has anyone got any ideas? He is generally a easy to handle and he hasn't kicked out at a human before in the time that he has been with me-which is only a couple of months. He is 6 but hasn't done a lot and acts like a youngster. Maisie has shared the paddock with other horses in the past and was the dominant one of the two but recently Jethro seems to have turned the tables on her. They hack out together and are stabled next to each other overnight.
