Thanks Zelda for the help with the midges. The neem oil did help but Knight was not too impressed with the smell. The midges have mostly gone now, thank goodness. We had been dry for several weeks and then got 10" of rain in 2 days, after which I think all the mosquitoes that had been waiting to hatch took advantage and we have a bumper crop of them. Poor Knight, he will hardly come out of his barn at night. He positions himself so he can eat hay but be as close to the fan as possible to blow them away from him. Their pasture has alot of standing water which delights our part lab, Jake, who chases tiny frogs in the water. Knight has discovered something edible under the water and comes up with his head dripping, rather like a moose that you'd see in a nature program. Knight has many talents when it comes to eating. Franz being a youngster, splashes in the water and then rolls in it. Knight glares at him that he is rolling on perfectly good food. Poor Spurzi is having a tough time, he is somewhere over 30 years old and has begun to really show his age. He has a considerable wardrobe of rugs now to try to keep him from losing any more weight trying to keep warm. Knight and Franz look longingly at Spruzi's big bucket of feed at each meal, since they are such good doers they don't get much.
Thank goodness for all that I have learned from all of you Dales fans about ponies. I would have overfed Knight, so I'm glad to have learned about things like feed balancers, which we finally have more readily available in the US. And you can successfully keep a pony in our swampy land if you oil his legs.
