for the first time since last September, Sam has been hacking her out for a few weeks now, she's had 4 rides out with Connie and she's just been getting better and calmer with each ride, so I thought it was time for a ride.
It felt brilliant to be back on her after over a year if a little strange to start with, she is so different to Connie who is bigger, slimmer and more horse like than Em, she definitely felt much more pony like but gave me a very sturdy leg at each corner feeling.
Much to my amazement she gave me absolutely no cause for concern and I was able to ride her confidently from the start, she calmly plodded off down the road in the lead totally relaxed, I spent most of the ride riding her on the buckle with one hand, which is unbelievable!! We had a short trot across the meadow and again on a track across a wide open space, she was so relaxed with head low and her little ears pricked enjoying herself.
She is much less reactive now than she has ever been, just shows what a difference it makes now she is no longer in pain, although not always in real pain, I believe in retrospect that she was always in a degree of discomfort from her gut from the time she came to me, with various things like wormers etc. causing flare ups until her op last Oct was the final straw.
It is so wonderful to have my lovely girl back, I thought she would never be ridden again, I just have to fit in riding 2 ponies now, they are quite different to ride but I enjoy them both in their different ways.

It was the intention to take both ponies out this morning as my daughter was here but it's blowing a gale again so thought better of it, I will ride Em again next week with Sam, then have Sam come out on foot a couple of times while we get used to going out alone again before going it completely on our own.
I had forgotten how I enjoyed riding Em before my accident and only remembered how tense and spooky we both were afterwards and I had thought I didn't really want to ride her regularly again. But after just one ride I've realised what a lovely ride she is and now want to ride her myself, she is different to Connie, who, if I'm honest, is as near to perfect for me as I could hope for, but I can now see myself enjoying riding both ponies.
It was never the plan to have 2 ponies to ride but I am retired so have the time and neither of them need riding every day to stay sane, so I plan to perhaps ride them on alternative days and see how it works out.
I'm even thinking now that I'll take Emerald to some rides and clinics etc. next year, just have to manage her carefully to keep her gut healthy.
I think this is the best Christmas present ever and I feel so lucky to have 2 such lovely and delightful mares, they are both very easy and so settled together, never any conflict between them which makes life very easy for me.

Wonderful. I've got a tear in my eye just reading this. Hats off to you for contemplating riding both ponies. Part of me would love to keep dolly ridden as well as Harvey but I just don't seem able to find the time and motivation.

I took her out on her own this morning, just a short ride around the village, she was a little more tense without Connie and called a few times as we set off but soon settled. She was also slightly more jumpy with cars but hardly reacted at all when a lorry passed us and ignored my request for him stop. Very pleased with her.
