When I went to get the ponies in this afternoon I was faced with an empty field, I have often arrived and not been able to see the ponies only to find them half in the hedge, with them being dark it is easy to miss them against the hedge line, but no they weren't there, the field really was empty. The gate was closed and I thought they must have been stolen, I stood there in disbelief feeling really sick and reasoning that if they'd been stolen surely the thieves wouldn't have closed the gate behind them when I noticed the gate at the top of the field was undone. I scanned the other paddocks, nothing, back to thinking they had been stolen when Connie appeared looking very smug and covered in straw out of the dutch barn where the straw is stored, closely followed by Emerald, also covered in straw. I can't describe the relief I felt.
They meekly followed me into their stables only to find no tea, I always leave their feeds in their stables ready for when they come in and they had obviously taken themselves in at some point and polished off their teas, they were not impressed.
On looking around at the hoof prints and poo piles they had obviously had a wonderful time in all the places they are not supposed to go like my landladies lawn, straw barn, old granary building and one of the pig buildings, I gave them a good look over and felt their legs as there are various bit of machinery stored in the barn which could cause damage, but all seems OK.
The main yard gate is always closed but if there is a delivery of pig food or a local farmer comes to take away the muck heap or empty the slurry pit the gate is left open until they have finished and the ponies could easily have wondered out onto the road. Thank God there were no vehicles in and out today.
Still haven't got over the shock, but very relieved that they are now safely back in their stables, I was only thinking as I drove to get them in that it would be nice to be able to allow them to stay in the yard area with access to their stables on a wet day like today, but the yards not set up in a way that would make this possible, they obviously had the same idea, little darlings.
