Lorry packed, ponies washed and scrubbed, wine in the fridge, just collapsed in the chair and wondering whether I've forgotten anything, just last minute stuff to put in in the morning. As long as I remember ponies and saddles and bridles we'll be OK.
My daughter Amanda hasn't got transport for her pony so she is taking Emerald this year, I'm very excited about it as I think it will do her a world of good, at 9 she is starting to grow up at last although she does still have her moments and if anything has become more opinionated now she is physically mature. I learned the true value of the Western saddle last week when I stopped on a hack to talk to a friend and her dog, the dog started barking and was advancing on Em, who was getting a bit worried, Bev made a very quick movement to grab the dog and frightened Em who spun very sharply and took off across the grass, down a steep bank and onto the lane, she cantered up the lane weaving from side to side before I managed to stop her. I lost both stirrups but miraculously I was still on board, I was unbalanced a few times but in her English saddle I'd have been off at the spin and wouldn't even have made it to the bank.
I am really looking forward to camp this year with both ponies there, can't wait to see what Em makes of it all, the only downside is that in order to go to camp I've had to cancel going up to Barney for Presidents week as my mother in law dying recently has really knocked my husband hard, they were very close, and on top of that he has been quite ill over the last month, he is on the mend now but still not good. He is disabled anyway and I feel it would be too much for him for me to be away this week at camp, home a week, away a week for presidents week, back 5 days then away on a weekend ride.
As Amanda couldn't go to camp or the w/k ride if I don't go I opted to do those 2 and not presidents week, I had a feeling when I booked it something would go wrong to stop me going, but I thought it might be my Mum, who although frail is still hanging on by her fingernails. I'm gutted not to be going to Barney, but at least I'll enjoy camp, even last week it seemed doubtful I'd make it and after all the stress of the last couple of months I really need a break.
I bet Emerald will be the first pony the BHS have ever had at camp in a Western saddle, I wonder what they'll make of that! We will of course be taking her English saddle too in case Amanda feels the desire to jump anything more than very small jumps, but she will start off in the western for extra security as she too has experienced Em's sharpness.
