Yesterday Emerald and I drove to Harling forest in Norfolk to meet up with Mandy (NFK dumpling) and Musk for a ride, it was the first time I'd done anything like this with Emerald for over 2 years and I'd forgotten just how easy she is, happily standing on the lorry until Mandy arrived then standing still to be tacked up and relaxing quietly by the box afterwards while we ate lunch and chatted, the nearly knee high grass was much appreciated, Connie in comparison is much more of a live wire and doesn't stand still well at all.
It was a lovely ride, we ventured into parts of the forest I didn't know well and both ponies behaved very well, they were much better matched for pace than Connie and Musk. The sun shone and we had lots of good trots and although we had a couple of attempts at short canters the ground was still rather hard which was surprising as it is usually good going in the forest. Both ponies took advantage of the lush undergrowth and overhanging trees to grab snacks along the way.
This was the first time since before my accident that I had taken Em out like this on her own and I was a little nervous, but she was a star, never put a foot wrong, it helped having a quiet riding companion but she surpassed all my expectations of her, thank you Mandy and Musk for the company.
We have a PR booked for Sunday and we are meeting a friend there to ride with her on her quiet cob and I am now really looking forward to doing this with Em, I'm so pleased to be finding pleasure in riding her again, and not just short rides around the block as I thought might be our lot, but riding her properly. She is feeling very well now and has grown up a lot, I really feel we have turned a big corner.
