I can't believe the state Frankie and Eve get themselves into and was dispairing of ever getting Eve clean enough to put a saddle on. I wanted to let her winter out in her natural state and she did tell me a few weeks ago that she would rather not be rugged. But today I decided enough is enough and popped a no-fill rug on her after me and Ali had given her a good grooming. She was quite funny when we turned her out. She stood still, then turned to look at her left side and then her right side as if she couldn't quite beleive what had happened. Fingers crossed she is still wearing her rug tomorrow morning. Are yours as filthy as my 2? Eve Frankie

We've had to rug as we're on thick clay... The mud locks are horrendous and don't brush out. Most are clipped anyway and Rory is rugged as we're having a battle still to diagnose what's wrong so are currently treating him as a pssm horse

Poor Rory and what a worry for you. It seems to have been ages since you first started looking for answers. I remember the worry when I thought Harvey might have a long term muscle problem which fortunatley turned out not to be the case. Do keep us posted. Where are you currently at with Rory?

Oh yes, mud monsters R us 😂 I'll try and get some pics later. We even have a bit of mud on the mats, but it's not too deep. Chopped a foot off all tails yesterday 😐

whoa! They take their mudpacks seriously! I think it's sensible to put a rug on them if you're going to be riding. I've always found Blossom needed leg straps to keep her blankets on when outside. She turns her bum to any wind and gets horrified when her blanket lofts off. At least the straps keep the blanket on the pony. Last winter I also discovered belly band horse blankets for Dundee and Rita. What a godsend! It kept their girth areas much dryer and cleaner and it was an added boon to have the straps higher up. www.sstack.com/c_blankets-sheets_horse-blankets_waterproof-turnout-blankets-sheets/stormshield-contour-collar-classic-bellyband-turnouts/Reigny and Blossom thankfully were much neater and cleaner with their blankets.

That's a good idea, having a wide bellyband. I haven't seen a rug like that over here. With Harvey I used to put a thin snuggy hood under his rug to keep the belly clean but I don't want to over-rug Eve as she isn't clipped.

Sammie is a total bog troll, I also rug just so I can ride.
Pam, I just clipped Sammie’s belly and neck. I find the warmth of his tummy usually dries mud up so it can be brushed off. He’s in a no fill rug. However he’s usually been bought in a couple of hours before I get to the yard so this works for me.

Fi, yes I think a small neck and belly clip would be a good plan - if I can get her clean enough to clip! I've got her in a no fill rug now, much to her annoyance. It is a good fit and doesn't appear to put undue pressure anywhere but I'm still a little concerned.

Pam we've had over 2 years of different ideas with Rory. His gamma gt ck and ast levels have been pretty high. Liver biopsy said it wasn't ragwort poisoning or damage but more likely to be a muscle myopathy. Muscle biopsy didn't show much. Pssm type 1 came back negative. Last year for some reason he started to look so much better, put some weight on, was going out and dressaging and seemed happier then over this winter he's suddenly gone back down hill. He's lost a lot of muscle and his winter coat is awful. We tested for cushings which I was convinced would be positive but wasn't. He's currently not sound and flexioned lame on 3 legs. Debating trying cartrophen. Also about to send off for the 4 panel pssm 2 test.

Goodness, Emily, how strange. He is certainly testing all the experts. Sounds like it might be PSSM. Poor Rory. Do keep us posted.

It's def not pssm 1 but there are more and more pssm 2 conditions being found that are similar to muscular dystrophy in humans and there's probably more to discover. It may be we never find out. Put a photo on my Facebook today of him and Duke and he's tiny in comparison

That's interesting. I haven't been following the research on pssm lately. I knew there was 1 and 2 but not that there were more. Just had a look at your FB page and am amazed at how small he is next to Duke. I hope you do get to the bottom of it, it must be very worrying for you. The vets must be very interested in him though. Do keep us posted .

Poor Rory! Sounds like he's really been through the wars I wonder what conditions happened that let him have such a good space? That may give the vets a clue what's going on and how to correct it? I agree, though, it may be one of those things that simply never get an answer.
