However, i have NO idea how to go about this, ie to make it horse safe, and when to do it, do i try and get a local farmer to do it etc? I have access to someones field I can use for a bit if ponies need to come out! any help?

Some of the sprays need to be applied by a person with a certificate. If you find out what spray you want to use, and ask either a local farmer or at a farmers store, they will tell you whether or not you can do it yourself.
Spray when the plant is actively growning - in April or May when they sprout.
We take animals out for a minimum of 10 daysfor safety.
We spot spray thistles and dockens and nettles with Round-Up which works well on a small area. For the bigger areas we use the tractor and sprayer.

We do the same as Jane. Is it a big area that needs spraying or just a small patch?

We use the stuff that you need a certificate for and get it done- think its an agritox / depitox mix. Dont recommend roundup- kills the grass, can always tell when the natives have sprayed nettles with it over the fence as there's usually a telltale ring. Suppose it'd be ok if you were really careful but I wouldnt recommend it. Id speak to a friendly local farmer or farm supply shop.
