I've just bought a battery powered fencing kit the type that uses car batteries, to fence round where I'm going to plant some hedging to protect the field shelter - I hope ;D I know we've discussed this before but what is the best type to use, I think I remember something caravan/boat batteries being best - where is the cheapest places to buy them

I use big batteries, like the ones in 4x4's Zelda, but by far the best at keeping its charge and recharging is the Leisure Battery made by rutland. It was expensive to buy, but I only have to charge it every couple of months so as far as I'm concerned it was worth it.

All the leisure batteries I've had (and they are many!) have died fairly quickly for £70s worth! i now have a £30 car battery which has been great especially as I bought a solar trickle charger for it (about £12) which means it only needed charging every blue moon this summer. I haven't tried it this winter. You can get a mains jobbie for about £50 so that would be the best option if you can get juice to it.

How much tape are you energising Zelda? ie how many runs of x mm wide tape?

I found the standard rechargeable leisure batteries were the best and would last me 2 months constant use before needing recharging jbut they do get worse and worse the more you charge them. They all die on me completely in about 2 years. I've more or less given up on them because I don't want to lug heavy batteries around.
Lucy - I haven't heard of a solar trickle feeder. Sounds like a great idea - where did yhou get yours from?

Lucy I have no idea how much tape - it depends on how many ickle plants I plant, but given how concrete like out ground is (yes even under all this mud) it wont but much ;D the tape that came with the kit is 200m by 12.5mm def wont use all of that

I have a heavy duty car battery and it has been going for months now, in the summer it powered the electric fence and at the moment it is powering my stable light as we have no electricity at our stable. I haven't had to recharge it yet.

I use the leisure batteries. Mine only died because my OH boiled it in my wheelbarrow! I'd had it at least two years and it was fine. Probably electrifying about a mile of wire rope. Battery green but can't remember the make.

How to destroy two perfectly servicable bits of kit in one strike: place battery in wheelbarrow, attach to defective charger and leave for five hours. To be fair it had been OK until then. Base of wheelbarrow was lovely and shiney and I'm still muckpicking into it.....
