OK 2 weeks to performance show and can't jump ! Need to make some cheap homemade jumos and get teaching myself quick. Used to be able to jump but now a wimp and CB can jump but prefers to do other things like catleap and duck out. I can do various things to sort that - but I wonder what other people use to practise jumps at home? Any tips for how to make them?

1) Straw/hay Bales, 2) go search in the woods for any biggish logs/fallen trees! - pile them all together if there are only little ones 3) old oil drums/plastic drums/milk crates for 'wings' 4) maybe just buy one long pole and you can use it in varying jumps 5) anything else you can think of!!! LOL 6) probably shouldn;t say this but roadworks! the striped plastic planks
Have Fun!!!!

:Dlol did consider roadworks but obviously wouldnt do that kind of thing! Off to search woods and ring up as many tree surgeons as can find - now a little worried that I entered the jumping!

Ang
minimalist option is existing yard broom, buckets and assorted jackets/jumpers as fillers! Go for it!!!!

Sarah good idea about the jumpers/jackets - rustic is ok for the working hunter but you've got to add a little colour Ang for the showjumping........
You will have a great time - I will come in with you with a bucket if you like and CB can follow me round the jumps! LOL

You two girls are all heart! Just spoken to a tree surgeon friend of mine and I'm getting a Willow tomorrow!! Thinking of starting a programme called 'Ang'll fix it'. Think I will try something exotic too - might have to use clicker to get him into it firstly. If nothing else I will provide you with some entertainment next week. LOL

Old tyres make a good jump as well, only make sure the jumping part consists of them upright in a row rather than stacked up flat as the pony could get a foot in the hole!
If you can get enough of them you can put them in a row with a stout pole through the middle of them and stack more either side to hold them in place.
If you have a trailer I am sure you could find a farm that wants to get rid of them (nearly all farms I know of have loads!).

Thank you for the tyre idea - I am having lots of thoughts but now everything I walk passed is being inspected for potential jump use! I just know I can be inventive. We Dales fans are nothing if not resourceful. Alison - yes please you can run in front of me with a bucket or a carrot, I think that will work nicely - I will just hold on tight.

Building site skips are wonderful treasure troves - bits of blue piping instead of buying poles for instance.

We made all our jump poles out of drain pipe which is inexpensive compared to wooden poles. Just painted them with a bit of gloss that was lying about. The only thing is they are quite light so I put some old bits of wood and bags of stones inside them to stop them blowing about. You will get oil drums for local garages and they re usually very happy to part with them. I used old pallets for pretend water jump spreads or fillers and the pond in the field is a cracking water jump!

Old feed sacks filled with hay/straw for scary fillers?

My OH has made a whole course of WH jumps from old pallets. He's made mangers, rustic wings, beehives, ski jumps, bullfinches, trellis filler, walls and fan jumps. He's restricted by the size of the pallet so the wings only go up to about 3.5' but that's plenty big enough for me.

blue tarpaulines for water jumps. Tyres are free from a friendly garage! My poles were £4.00 each from local timber yard!
