Debbie we have an all in one mask for Cobweb called 'Field Relief'. It was great last year and rarely came off and dint cause any rubs at all. It covers ears , face and nose and the nose bit is detatchabl. Cobweb used to push the nose bit up if she wanted a drink then push it back down herself on the grass!

My friend's chestnut mare used to get sunburnt on her nose, so she used the total sunblock you get for kids at the chemist. It's much cheaper than specialist sunblock for horses and is more or less exactly the same stuff. I think she paid about £3 for a great big tub - ask at your local boots/chemists and they'll point you in the right direction.

Boots used to make a bright green stick that was apple scented. Because it was coloured you could see when it's had rubbed off and needed topping up. That was the best one I had for Kahn.
At one point I sewed one of my dad's hankies onto his noseband as an emergency measure!

I have a real problem with sun and fly masks, as i worry a wasp or fly might get in and drive them mad!! Also if they roll in it, wet mud sticks in the weave and could obscure their vision.
I go for e 45 total sun block. It is a bit 'chalky' but stays put and does the job very well.

LOL.... I can just imagine her EATING the hankie, Olivia!!! ;D But that is a clever idea, and certainly a good one in an emergency.
I'll just have to give the sunblocks a try and see what she makes of them. Ditto to a flymask. Khristyne I've often wondered about a fly getting stuck in one, but then I guess its down to making sure there are no gaps for the nasties to get in...

Yes - Olivia recommended the apple sunblock to me a few years back because I was having fights getting anywhere near Merlin with suncream /sunblock. It is the only one I have ever tried (and I've tried some 20-30 different ones...) that Merlin would tolerate me putting on. Everything else he would try rearing/pulling back etc but the solid apple one he would stand still and let me rub it on. It did leave him with a bright green nose, but that also meant I could see if I'd missed a bit. I didn't realise they'd stopped making it though. (Luckily I stocked up and still have a couple of tubes left.)

Alison - they might still make it - I've not had to look for it since I had Kahn pts.
I hope they still do.

We used the Field Relief Mask all summer last year and no flies or midges got in. We were plauged by them being near water!

i use a cashel quiet ride for molly, it's the only one i've seen that covers enough to protect the white under/aroound the muzzle as well as on top, it's a nice snug fit and she's quite comfortable in it. have used the same one for three years so even though intially quite a bit, works out great value long term!

I thought about the apple scented sun block but was a bit worried the other horses would try and eat Bill's nose!! I ended up getting Soltan total sun block factor 50 for children. It's buy one get one free on Boot's sun stuff at the minute, so it works out quite reasonable. Good job really, as I am using quite a bit at the minute. Just got to work out how to stop him rubbing it off now. I always end up with some on me before I turn him back out. The stable door has a white streak and I even saw the trough getting some sun protection last night!!lol! ;D
