My poor mare misty has been to horsey hospital today for a leg scan. Her annular ligament is inflammed and tight so causing pressure and fluid build up. She has had some fluid drained today and steroids injected to try to reduce the swelling. shes on box rest for 3 weeks then re scanned and if no better she will have an operation to cut the ligament. I suppose considering i went thinking it was a completely knackered tendon and she would have to be retired its a good thing but shes going to have a lots of work done to get her right. they said she will be able to go back to full work and competing too. they said it can be caused by a simple twist in the field. she was not amused by the amount of needles shes had stuck in her today, 3 in neck and two in her leg, i thought i was going to be sick! Bt if it had been claudia none of us would have got out alive if they had produced a needle!

This is exactly what Dan has, I didn't opt for steroids or op due to his age and weight, he has been retired to pasture for the last year. He still has the swelling but it's not as big - and he can be ridden lightly. However he has lost his lovely knee action My vet said Dan was better off out than in, as movement would prevent adhesions? He never had any box rest - but perhaps it's needed after steroids and draining. Good luck with the steroids, and the op if its needed.

Gill, shes on box rest as if she goes mental in the field the ligament will get more inflammed and tighten even more which could cut off the blood supply. He explained something about the movement of the joint but i cant remember that bit, i was trying not to pass out when he put this needle in her leg! Shes settled this morning as she has a stable mate who has laminitus. Shes a right stress head so we have some sedalin for her if she starts to stress in her box. Poor mist shes such an outdoor horse i feel so cruel but i know its for the best.
