dan has been a bit extra itchy for a while now. but he had 2 stay in for 2 nihgts as he was lame from his foot infection again.
thursday morning he had bumps all over his neck where he had rubbed, he had rubbed his tail and kicked his back legs which in places were raw!!
i rang the vet as i thought it was mites as i couodnt see any lice on him and he gave me some stuff to sponge on him. today he is loads better a and not itching at all.
i think its come form the hens in the next stable as they are never cleaned out and smell gross.
has anyone elses horse had these??

Yep. I got a shetland that had them, and a friend of mine bought a foal that had been rugged and he was heaving with them. The vet recomended that I use Battle Hayward and Bowyer louse powder that's meant for sheds and stables, and litterally shake it all over the horse, making sure it gets well into the coat and mane and tail. It wqorked and was a lot cheaper than other options. Perhaps you could get a tub of the powder as back up - and to toss over into the hens!!

i couldnt see anything on dan so thats why i thought htey were mites rather than lise??
i have read on the tinternet that the ones i belive dan had are microscopic!!
the stuff the vet gave me was in a little bottle and it was called barricide or something like that
have you ever heard of that?

No, never heard of it, sorry. As far as I remember this powder kills all sorts of creepy crawlies. Hope you get rid of them soon, they are vile

if it's chicken mites you're unlikely to see them on dan in daylight. they live in bedding, cracks and crevices, coming out at night to feed on chicken blood. they are poultry's version of a bedbug. the environment needs treating to kill them - bedding removed and insecticide applied. i overheard 3 customers buying cans of indorex spray for hen houses today, weather conditions must be ideal for the bugs. poor dan, mkes me squirm just thinking about them running on him good luck in exterminating them.
