felix came in 2 weeks ago today with a big swollen area over his right hip. his left hip looked visibly dropped and lower. he wasnt lame or in pain but must have some discomfort as was being very bad to pick up that back foot to have it cleaned out. called vet out. vet said yes left hip deff looks lower and right hip area deff swollen but after trotting up.manipulating(like for a flexion test) and an internal she couldn't say whats wrong. she said to rest for at least a week and he had one bute a day for 3 days.this hasn't made any differnce.it looks exactly the same. she now thinks the next step is to ultrasound scan the hip and back area. i can't see how this will help as shes already said it can't/won't be a bony problem like a fracture or the like as he'd be obviously lame and sore. i was wondering wether to get a chiro to look at him before we go down the scanning route as she seems to not know whats wrong really and i don't want to be paying for endless tests just because the vets stumped as to what it is. does this sound like a sensible thing to try first? i don't want to seem mean but i want to try the less expensive options first before we go down the expensive hospitalization and scanning route.Especially as hes not acting any different than normal and isn't lame or in obvious discomfort.

I would be giving him some arnica tablets as it sounds as though he has injured himself. Different ponies will show a different level to pain, and some can be really stoic. If he's been in with others, he may have been kicked....or its possible he was running and ran himself into a tree or other solid object.
Is there any area throwing off heat?? I'd hold off for a little bit, and then get the chiro out myself. I'd also see about getting him shiatsu massage. I know how you feel about doing the endless tests. Its not really a matter of money, but a waste of time and effort if its just a fishing expedition because the vet hasn't a clue.

I'd definitely get the back man out as the first option, whether bowen, chiro or osteo.
with the ultrasound, do they have to use a general anaesthetic, or can it be done with the horse standing? That would sway my decision too, as I'd not want a GA unless we'd explored all other options first.
Hope Felix soon improves.

hi was initally a little bit of heat and the swollen area(about 1 1/2'' high) was hard to touch.i feels a lot more squidgy today and the heat hasn't been present for about 1 1/2 weeks since it happened. he is out with 4 others and we initally thought it might have been a kick but there wasnt any signs of him being kicked like skin scrapes or hair loss just the swelling.i thought even if it was swollen from a trauma it would have decreased in size in 2 weeks. Its basically looking the same as it did except the swollen areas more soft and squidgy. i called a mc timothy practioner and a chiro today and both sound helpful but need vets permission so il talk to vets tomorrow and get one of them to come out to see him. which would be better for muscles a chiro or a mctimothy practioner?
