When I was mucking out Bumbles stable to night the smell of ammonia was so strong it was making my eyes water and my nose tingle. He has an automatic drinker so not sure if he's just not drinking enough, so I've left a full bucket of water in his stable tonight aswell. He has wet speedibeet on a morning and lots of hay all day.
is there anything I can give him to stop it smelling so strong?

He's not on rubber flooring by any chance Alison or is the floor not draining properly? Sometimes if the stables are due for wash out they can absolutly stink of ammonia, as its the build up over time.

I never thought of the heat - yes its been warm here too.
Anna , he's not on rubber matting and the bedding gets thrown back/cleard out each day, must just be the heat then!

I found at certain times in the year the grass causes strong wee. Last year at autumn it was awful.

I'm sure this was discussed at one time on the old board, I think someonme suggested that putting apple juice in the drinking water solved the problem - it might not have apple juice, come on help me out someone must remember it ;D

It might have been apple juice. I remember reading it at the time and thinking that was something I must remember.....and then promptly forgot!
With all the rain lately the grass has changed so I would think the smell is a combination of the warm weather and the new, wet grass.

My old boy has been REALLY smelly and very wet over the last week or so!! i have been going through shavings more quickly than normal. We are on rubber matting, but they still have a bed down.. i know that he doesn't drink much in the night, because he rarely touches his bucket of water, but I am fairly sure he drinks out of the trough in the field regularly! How can I encourage him to drink more then?

It was apple juice, I noticed Henry's wee smelt today when I was mucking out. Might be a boy thing he drinks plenty of water
