I assume this is slippy stifle, I am in the process of sorting out Henrys big boy licence and on the blurb it says they wont be passed if a vet detects this. Henry has a funny stifle but its not all the time only when he has a growth spurt then it might be a bit clicky for a couple of days and it passes until he grows again. Do you think this will affect him getting a licence, providing he is on a good day? I know a lot of young horses get it and it never causes a problem long term. Or do I say this to the vet and hope he says the same as me or should I just keep my trap shut and hope for a good day?? EEEK

Sarah, there are specific exercises that can be done to detect this- and then to strengthen it. I know when we have had a colt put through this the vet was rigerous, but if the vet only goes through the equiv of a full vetting, then so long as he doesn't have an off day, it may not get picked up.
Its not uncommon in youngsters who need to develop strong muscles in that area, although I've known older horses who have been born with a problem to still be weak going downhill as a result, even when they've been in their early teens. A vet would want to know that there wasn't anything that could be passed onto any offspring and that might mean a scan if he picks it up.

Should grow out of this - may be able to sort it now with some physio advice and exercises to strengthen the area.
