Has anyone heard of a diabetic horse? I know a horse who eats like, well like a horse! but is lean, doesn't have a huge amount of energy and drinks masses. And wees a lot. I've had a look on the net and there's not a lot about it, but my cat was diabetic and he lost weight, ate and drank heaps, wee'd a lot and was lethargic. This horse seems much the same to me. Any ideas of what else it could be? He's in good health otherwise, poos are normal, he's got a lovely shiny coat etc. Thanks

It does crop up i am afraid. It could be cushings disease as well.

There more the symptoms of cushings, not heard of diabetes in horses but Id say its possible to have it. Might be tempted to get the vet to do some routine bloods just to check everything as if it is diabetes and its similar to humans the earlier its diagnosed and controlled the better long term

We had an insulin resistant horse on our yard, showed the symptoms you mention and it turned out to be cushings, she was the most un-cushingy horse ever. She wasn't on any medication as there wasn't really anything to treat, haven't seen her for a few years but heard she was still out and about hunter trialling.

Oh I've got an EXCELLENT link to a discussion group that deals with insulin resistent horses, and other metabolic disorders (like cushings).
I've not got it at work - I'll post it tonight.

He doesn't look in the slightest bit cushingsy! The vet will be doing his boosters shortly so I could ask him and get bloods taken at the same time...
Thanks Olivia, that would be great.

It's called "TheMetabolicHorse" and is a yahoo group. If you go to www.yahoo.com and search for TheMetabolicHorse you should find it. I can't seem to find a direct link for it as I have the messages emailed to me directly Olivia

Bex on here has just had her pony diagnosed with Cushings. He had laminitis first and didnt really have any obvious signs of cushings until he was tested. He drank more and ate like I dont know what but didnt put weight on. His coat is normal and shiney too. Are his eye sockets sunken in or filled? this is a sign of cushings too.

Yeah, it is Rowena. I wasn't going to say who it was but I don't see why i shouldn't really! Just feels funny somehow because he's on loan. His owner says he's always been a lean machine, and he certainly has been since I first met him 4 years ago. My farrier thinks he looks OK, thinks it's his age (17) that's stopping him putting on muscle.
Think I need to get him tested just for my peace of mind - I'd hate for him to be not right and me do nothing.
Edited again to say I'm not convinced about the age/muscle thing. 17 isn't old really is it?

I'd get the vet to check as well, then you'll know one way or the other. I don't think 17 is old either
