Hi all
As you may remeber from the other posts backed in May of this year and then ridden for 5 weeks and turned away for a few weeks.
After this i moved jobs and so moved home and took Felix with me, i moved him to the new yard in August. Within a week of moving he came in from the field with a large swelling above his right hip, about 12'' square and about 2'' higher thanon the other side. His the left hip looked like in was lower and further into his body than the right, i.e. his pelvis looked unlevel from behind.
There was no pain or lameness and no signs of a kick. I am a vet nurse and was unsure as to what he might have done to himself so i got our vet to look at him and after a trot up, manipulation of the back, legs, and hip area and an internal she deducted that there was no boney changes and that the swelling was trauma based either from a kick in the field or him falling over on that hip and that the swelling was either a haematoma or a seroma.
I was advised by the vet as it wasn't painful and he wasn't lame to rest him, give him a few weeks and to see what happened.
After 2 weeks rest there was no improvement so called vet again who said a chiro would be hopefully able to help and if the chiro thought that they could not help then the vets could ultrasound scan it.
I decided to get a chiro out first and managed to get a Mc Timothy chiro to come out and see him. She has been to seeing him every 2 weeks now and has just finished his 3rd session and although there was a noticably visiable improvement after the first 2 sessions this time there wasn't as much change and she was not as happy with the lack of improvement compared to the last visit.
Above the hip area is still swollen but very squidgy feeling and it is still quite dropped on left side. She has now said that she thinks that she can do no more for him and wants to speak to her collegues for ideas as it what it could be and what could be causing it.
Shes advised to ride him out hacking in walk and trot (in stright lines) to see if it helps the swelling dissapitate and she is going to come back in a month for a review.
If it still seems no better then she thinks that a full vet work up will be the next step, he is insured so that isn't an issue but if i have to claim now (he's only 4) then il no doubt not be covered for the hip area for the rest of his life and hes got a lot of it left hopefully.
Has anyone seen this type of thing before or can anyone offer any advice, i can see full vet work up as being very expensive as they couldn't find anything that was causing the hip to be dropped on the first visit and hes not (and never has been) in any pain or lame which is the weirdest thing. The vet was even unable to make him go lame whilst doing a flexon test and you know how many sound horses go lame whilst having them at vettings!!
Do you think that a physio might be better than a chiro maybe?
He is happy, lively, cheeky and it does not seem to bother him in the slightest he just looks strange.
Sorry for the very long post but we are at a loss. Any help or advice would be gratefully recieved as im very anxious to do what i can to help him get better
Thankyou for taking the time to read and reply to this (hopefully).
