I just wondered what you guys know about nosebleeds. I know if it's both nostrills it's not good, but one int too much to worry about. I think it was last year some time when Lea first had a nosebleed that I know of. It was just from one nostrill & just though that as she was qute sweaty, she must have been running round the field & burst a blood vessell. I know that once they have done it once it is more likely to happen again, but since then she has had them on & off quite a few times (that i know of) Not so long since she had 2 in one month, neither time she was particularly doing owt daft, & she had another one yesterday & she was just stood in the stable. When the vet was out before with her legs & that I quizzed him about it then & he seemed to think that because she has had two in one month, it might be worth sticking the scope up to make sure there int owt dodgy going on, but at the time decided to leave it as she had enough issues without adding to them. My other concern is that fact that these are the only nosebleeds that I know of, that have basically happened while i'm there. I'm sure there must have been other times she has had them and me not know simply because by the time they have stopped & she has finished licking away the evidence wi her big lizard tongue, theres no way of knowing, & i find it very hard to believe that coincidently(sp) I will have been there every time!! She is going into Minster Vets (her 2nd home lately) tomorrow for a scope sticking up there, but thought i'd see if anyone else has a ned that suffers? ?

Not mine but one on the yard does. He's got some sort of COPD which is seasonal. God knows what triggers it but its the exact week every year that his breathing causes problems and its usually around this time he has nosebleeds.

Old grey mare at our yard get's them quite regularly. Vet said it was a melanoma across one nostril, but she wasn't bothered by it, and because of her age wouldn't bother doing anything, as it is major surgery to remove. She is never bothered by them, but it is quite scary seeing it.

My cob had them and was scoped. The scoping was clear- it turned out to be the wheat and pea allergy that was causing them! A change in diet saw them off.

Did the scoping show anything up, Lisa? No, not really at the mo, thanks for asking though. Not much to report really!!! Lea was a very good girl. They had a look up there nothing particularly stood out. Anything to be really concerned about was normal which is good. They seemed to be more interested in the amount of snot/discharge that she had (which she has always been a snotty beast) & took a sample of stuff from down near her lungs which had more snot stuff in then it should normally have really. They are going to test it for traces of blood & will take it from there then. He said that she would be better on haylage to help control her snot rather than hay, and hifi (which she already has) however as much as lea likes haylage, if she has too much it just goes straight through her & she gets an upset tummy. If the hay is dusty she does get it watered down, but he still said she would be better on haylage. Will have to see if i can introduce it slowly into her diet. Usually i feed her half haylage half hay so she doesn't get too much. So......... we basically need to wait for the results of the stuff they took & thats about it really, don't know much more. He said if nowt comes from that then will have to wait till she has another & then scope her again within about 4 hours of her having it to try find where it is coming from. To be honest though if they don't find owt when they test the sample I don't think i'll bother & just accept that they are harmless nosebleeds. It was very interesting watching the screen though!!!

Oh thats goodish news then. The only horse I know of that has nosebleeds was one that was eventing and wouldnt drink water at the event and used to get dehydrated and have a nosebleed. It was always fine though.

Well, I suppose that's positive, Lisa - that there's nothing obviously causing the nosebleeds. See what the snot tests show I guess, and take it from there. When do you expect to get the results?

Our scoping only showed a mild infection. It was bloods tests that were sent to York for allergy testing that finally uncovered the problem. I hope yours is more straightforward

Well, the vets have called today & said that they couldn't find a trace of any blood in the sample that they took from her lungs but she has an infection on her lungs, & it could be that when the infection is flaring up it could be causing the nosebleed, however i'm not really sure how long she would have had this infection for as she has always been a snotty pony. Whether it's because her immune system has taken a beating lately with the whole cattle grid thing & surgery along with cellulitis from when she got kicked after that she has just picked it up not being able to fight it off, i don't really know. Dint really get the chance to have the full conversation with the vet as he had to go. It was a different vet to who she normally has & he doesn't seem to tell me idiot guide proof like the other guy does. He must know i'm dumb!!! :stupid: So, she has got 10 days worth of Baytril antibiotics & then he said something about scoping her again in approx 3 weeks time after exercise to have another look (not sure if thats really necessary though!!! ) I also didn't get chance to speak ask him about her exercise as he didn't tell me if she should stay at normal rate of work, lighter work, no work at all or what, so I will have to ring him tomorrow. Not impressed as I am getting the distinct feeling that i'm not gonna be able to take her hunting like I had planned next weekend. Poor Lilo, i feel really sorry for her & my bank balance!!!
