I'd second Lamisil - I got it once from leaning on a wooden fence for a field at last yard that (unknown to me) a cow with ringworm had been put in (at least, thats what GP reckoned.) It is horribly infectious and I find that mine tends to resurface whenever I'm stressed, so I've obviously not yet completely eradicated it. At the moment GP has suggested trying the standard month long course of Lamisil followed by 2 weeks of rubbing in tea tree oil and then back to the Lamisil

Well hes on the canaston, I was refused it over the counter cos I said it was for my horse, so I had to lie to the chemist who looked at me closely and started whispering to me and asking if it was for internal or external use - I had no idea it was thrush cream LOL! anyway im doing all the right things even washing him with hibiscrub and this antifungal soap the vet gave me but its not going yet - I hope I dont catch it but its hard to keep completey hands off - just had to ride bareback to a new field away from cows and untreated horses so that means my bums probably riddled with ringworm now!! oh well. I will bath myself in hibiscrub later. I think I may have had it already - its very itchy. Am going to try a global herbs mix they reccomended for him and echinacea.

Yes, you are right merlinalison and the ring worm can sit on wood fences, gates, etc for up to 20 years. Mum had it a fair few years ago and both vet, doctor and Dad (Farmer) said the same to her as well, which would ring true as Dad hadn't had an cattle with it for over 15 years, before Mum got it, and she had been working on the farm in the handling pens at the time.

Try not to scratch if you can, as it only aids the growth of the fungus. Sorry, but I have to say I was laughing over the pharmacist whispering to you about the internal/external bit Stuff's a real booger to clear up, though. Fungus, once its taken hold is pretty hard to shift, but it can be done

The ringworm has gone - I had all good intentions to do it homeopathically and herbally but instead I zapped it with thrush cream and neat hibiscrub and that did work a treat - Ive got a patch on my arm thats getting the same treatment now - yuck annying stuff ringworm!

Oh, hard luck getting it yourself. It's horrid isn't it, and it takes ages to go....you have my sympathy. Glad it's gone from Sultan now though.

When a yard I was on had a case of it the vet advised everyone to disinfect their tack, numnah's, blankets etc as it can be carried in that way also.

Oh ick!!! Glad your pony's clear, but really sorry you got stuck with it as well. What's the phrase? "misery loves company?" Hoping you can shift it as quickly as your pony

We have a few cases in the cattle now again but they usually become immune to it and I have had 3 horses get a patch, again, building up immunity to it providing they are exposed to it now and again to reinforce the antibodies. I usually add 5ml of Neem oil, 10 drops of Tea tree, 10 drops of Myrrh and 10 of Manuka oil to 250ml Aloe vera gel and apply 2 x daily till the scabs have dropped off and the area totally haired over again. Not much help at the moment as it's so grey and dark all winter but ultra violet light is the best way to kill the fungus so any horse that gets it usually recovers faster in spring and summer. You can also scrub stables, dences e.t.c with an anti fungal but the most common place to pick it up is when browsing in hedge where sunlight doesn't penetrate and the spores can survive.

Bobs has got ringworm now, we have had a case in the 'live out' fields and it has spread like wild fire! I thought I was one of the lucky ones whos pony had escaped it and after he has had 2 wash treatments of Mycrophyt he still got it! Iv used lamisil but now got some Imaverol stuff and treating with that. Its all around his mouth and theres one patch that looks better the rest looks the same. Iv been creasalting all the fence posts too as that is supposed to kill any spores.

hi bev - I know its awful but dont worry it will go, away again. the fungus attacks and lives in the hair folicle root - so very difficult to reach with washes - however they do prevent it spreading. the cycle is 4 - 6 weeks then the hair dies and fall out, taking the ringworm with it. Sultan just got clear of ringworm then casper came - casper then developed ringworm and I did wonder if it would reinfect Sultan but it didnt.Anyway - I hope your well, feel free to ciome and visit us over in Todmorden anytime! lx

Hi Lisa, Im not worrying about the ringworm, thats taken a back seat as we now have 5 cases of strangles that we know about.... all horses have been told to stay in fields and not come out so Bobs cant come in stable at night now. I just hope to god he doesnt get it. Im fed up with it all. Nice to hear Sultans ok, are you managing to ride much?

Oh heck, Bev, that is a worry. Are the Strangles cases at your yard then? It really has been one thing after the other for you this year. Fingers crossed Bobs stays clear of Strangles.

Yes Pam, only one has come back positive that I know of but Im sure the rest will be now its confirmed. Iv just been down to give him some hay and he galloped over absolutely starving lol. Iv washed the water trough out too as the bacterium lives in water longer. Its just a real worry for us all at the moment.
