Has anyone had any experience of this condition, my friend Lynette has a horse who has the condition on both his back legs, now apparently there is an operation to try and rectify the condition, but she has sort advice and is still not sure what to do, so any info would help.

I'm leaving Blossom's alone for now as she's still growing and only gets this when she's had a big growth spurt. A couple of days at the most, and she's sorted again. I can get her to back up and it'll go back in place, but Blossom's devised her own way of spinning in a circle over the top of the locked stifle, and it unstickies. I just give her a couple arnica and ruta grav tablets in her buckets, and she's fine. I know if you can get the pony or horse going up and down hills, or trotting over poles, to encourage the legs up, this helps to build muscling and prevents this from happening. Blossom goes like a mad hare up and down her little hill. ...sans pudgy, out of shape owner but she still gets sticky stifles (mostly its her left) when her croup shoots up and the whole angle is so straight. You might ask Jacqui about some of the exercises. She listed quite a few the last time this was brought up. Val's Ebony did have the surgery, and she's assured me that should I need to look into that for Blossom in the future, it worked great! Apparently Ebony needed it for both hindlegs, and she said he's not had any troubles since. Pm me if you want to chat more about it.

Big cob at our yard get's it bless him. vet has recomended trying to get him working properly from behind to increase muscle which should help stop this happening, and also not to consider surgery until he has definitely stopped growing.

My 3 year old has JUST started to show signs of this! He has had a big growth spurt recently and gone bum high, so I am guessing that's why! The vet didn't seem at all concerned about it. I think he is going to grow LOTS over this Winter!

Flash and Jodie have both had this Hannah and Jodie still gets the occasional "drop" on the hind leg, doesn't stick anymore though, and she's 13! We left Flash over the winter and didn't do any work with him and he's fine now. He's coming up 5 so he may still have some growing to do , won't be overdoing his work!

I know my vet didn't reckon musch on the op and said it sometimes reverts back to locking. My old pony had one stifle that used to lock but it didn't seem to bother her (looked a bit drastic sometimes)

My pony had the op quite late in life - 9yrs - for this sort of thing and it was not a success.
He could do a 25mile LDR ride and trot up sound but one lap of a school and he would limp.
mmmmmmmm.........
