My poor little shetland Zak has had a an abcess in his mouth and was on antibiotics for a month. Sadly it hasnt helped and he still has a lump on his jaw, The problem is that he has a gap in his teeth which allows food to get trapped and that that has worked down into gum and become infected. The vet is coming back in a month to sedate him and have a good poke around, and will try and make the gap bigger so that food drops out ....but if that doesnt work we are looking at x-rays and tooth removal....whichvet tells me could cost as much as £600. I was only recently saying that it is a struggle keeping the 3 shetties as well as Betty,so this is a bit of a blow to say the least. Now all three have something wrong with them so I am unlikely to be able to rehome any of them! Ah well....lets hope it doesnt come to that, for poor little Zaks sake as well. The vet said when he told me how much that no shetland would even cost that much to buy and we had a sort of laugh about it.when he had left my friends daughter came up to me all worried and said "Zak will be ok wont he?" Bless her,she thought I was thinking of putting him to sleep if it was going to cost that much.....we had to tell her it was ok..he would havethe treatment if he needed it..... After all...who needs a new safe front door their house

Poor Zac. I hope you manage to avoid a tooth extraction. Which tooth is it? When Winnie had problems with his tushes (no abcess though) the equine dentist told me to brush his teeth daily with an antiseptic mouth wash to get rid of any trapped food and so prevent infection setting in. I did it for a while but it became too difficult for me in the end. Then Debbie here suggested I try Xylitol which I did and his tooth eventually disintgrated over time with out causing infection. His other tush has also gone now.
