A quick question for 'pelham people'.....do you use a lip strap? I was just wondering if I should get one for when I use a pelham on Jay. Am i right in thinking its more 'correct' to use one when showing?

Allways used one - no idea about showing - but it keeps things in place.

Yup - I have one on D! Fiddly little sucker to get on the bit, but it you get it set up right you dont even need to undo it ever again! I got my instructor to fit mine!! LOL ;D Like Rebecca says, it keeps things where they should be. Without it, I found the curb kept coming off when he threw his head about. Now, if it does come undone it doesnt all flap about either. I got mine off e-bay for a pittance! Dont pay a lot! Some I looked at were more expensive than the bloomin pelham!! cgi.ebay.co.uk/NEW-BLACK-LEATHER-LIP-STRAP-Horse-Pony_W0QQitemZ160004761472QQihZ006QQcategoryZ72585QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItemPretty sure I paid about this for mine! Dont ask me what is going on with the link!!!! Copy and paste the full lot into your browser as it is having a tantrum!! LOL

The object of the lip strap is to catch your curb chain if it unfastens so you don't lose it. So there's no right or wrong way when it comes to how tight you fasten it.

Personally, I have the strap loose enough so I dont have to unfasten to tack up and untack (who want to touch the fiddly buckle once it has been gozzed on!!!), but tight enough so it sits above the back of his lip if that makes sense as I dont like them to dangle and be overly loose!
So, if you leave enough room to manouver it on and off without undoing it, you wont be far wrong I dont think!
As Kermie said, it isnt right or wrong its personal preferance!

I thought the lip strap helped to keep the curb chain in place too. Do you have a curb guard? I always use a rubber guard too on my chain to stop the links from pulling the hair.

Well, according to a couple of websites i have just visited, the lip strap is to prevent a horse from 'lipping the bit' which is when the horse grabs the shank of a curb bit with its lips. LOL - So who knows!!! And this is what wikipedia say!!! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Curb_chain

Thanks everyone. I've ordered the one from e-bay....thanks Jo!
I don't have a curb guard but I've only been using the pelham for showing, so we don't use it regularly
