One of the ladies at our yard has started making bitless bridles, with her own pony and one of the girls as the first users. They loved them,so one was made for another pony, and my friend started riding Lucy in one as well. She goes so well in it,and the head waving(ie up and down violently) has stopped. She even listens when another horse charges past her as we found out a few days ago when an inconsiderate %&% from the yard down the road cantered past her in the corn field! So yesterday Betty was ridden in one,by a friend as I have a bad back and cant ride, and she went so well in it...lovely canter on way back twds the barn which she slowed to trot and walk with no fighting at all. So I have ordered one now as well. Another owner has an ex competiton mare who has serious issues when she gets upset, and explodes when she gets excited. She was tried in one in the field and apparently she went better than they had ever seen. Not been ridden out yet in it,but thats the next stage.
So...only 1 horse left to change, but he will be the biggest challenge as he has a few issues anyway with trying to bolt home,so its taking a bit of courage building to try him...lol
So..heres to my friends new venture,as she is going to try setting up selling them as a business....

I'll try and get her to post piccies.....
And she is asking £45 which includes reins,in marine grade rope..black only at present til she can afford to get more supplies in.
Perhaps I could suggest she considers a loan type service,as they do say not all horses accept them....

Good luck to her. I've often trud mine in rope halters and reins and been very appy with it. Feel I've as much control as any bit, and the horse is much happier. One thing I like about western is that it is acceptable to show in a bosal so no needs for a bit unless you want to.
Good luck to your friend

My old pony Trigger went beautifully in a bitless bridle, Harley is not bad but a bit unsure of the curb and poll action. Tempted to try Apollo in one to see if he drops his head.

Southerner...Yes it works on the same principle. Another good report today. A local showjumper tried one a mare he rides who apparently wont turn in the ring and fights the bit.He was so impressed he has ordered one to work her at home in and intends to check if he will be allowed to compete on her in it..... She isnt pretending she has invented anything, she has just worked out how to make a good, working bitless bridle that doesnt cost the earth. And so far we have all been pleased with them.

The showjumper is competing in it today so we are waited with baited breath to see how he gets on with the mare.
I am imprssed with how Betty is responding..I havent ridden her in it yet as my back is still bad,but she has been ridden in it by the lady who makes them. She managed to keep Betty at a walk whilst the 2 ponies she was with were cantered off...and when she tried to throw her usual fly bucks she was able to hold her head up and stop them...I am amazed. Then she cantered towards the barn across the field and again when she asked she slowed straight away....I admit I am nervous about my first time but if she keeps going that well I am sure it will be great. Yesterday she was ridden by a friends neice and again she behaved perfectly.
We were discussing how ,if they really wanted to,they could tank off with them, but then some so the same with bits as well,so it must be a case of what suits the individual horse.
We shall see....
