What size saddles do you get, I dont mean the wide, x wide etc its the length. I have a ahem larger bot ;D and with Daleses being quite short in the back do 17 1/2" saddles fit them ok what do you mostly have?

Harvey is very short coupled despite being 15hh and a 17" is the most he can take. I think you just have to judge where their last true ribs come to and go from that regarding saddle length.

Echo Harvey Dales - Merlin is just over 15hh but has more than enough room for an 18" saddle - and probably has room for an even bigger one... It varies so much from horse to horse so think you should go with your saddle fitter's advice. NB My Wow saddle is modular so you choose the panel and headplate sizes to fit your horse and the seat size to fit you - don't know if there are other saddles that do the same?

It also depends how long your legs are and whether there is room for them without your knees poking over the front of the saddle. My Wintec is 17" but seems more generous in the seat than other makes. It would probably help if you could try out a few makes for you and your pony.

Get a good saddler out to tell you Some saddle manufacturers will put long saddle flaps on a smallish seat which help if you're an adult on a pony. Magic is only 13.2hh and she takes a 17" saddle - but apparently you can take a bigger seat on a WH saddle than on a GP - obscure as it sounds!

Harley's is a 17.5 and suits him fine.

Oliver is very short backed and ideally a 15.5" saddle is best for him, and fortunately I am petite and its ok for me. Molly is 16.5". A saddler did tell me that my legs are long for my height, but so far they have not caused me a problem.

Lookm up thorowgood website ans have a mesasurement thing to help. 18" saddles can vary a lot depending on the make as measurement ids from nail head to cantle. So some 18 are longer but still 18". Mine are all 18" but phoenix and albion are almost 2" shorter than the isabell wintec!

There are so many differences, I just wondered about buying off ebay, ok so dont have pony yet but im just trying to think of everything I will need. I already have a bottom drawer tack I had from previous, lunge caveson, lunger rein some schooling whips, couple of haynets, couple of bridles but I dont think my lovely fine rolled leather one is going to suit a dales lol still wont sell it though, how sad is that

Hmmm, a good fit saddle is vital and is one thing you shouldn't even be considering if you don't have a pony yet.
Even if you did have one I'd be wary of buying a saddle off Ebay, (unless it was treeless or you knew that particular make and size of saddle was going to fit your pony) as you really need it to fit properly and you wouldn't have the option of returning it if it didn't fit.
