monster pony(escaping exmoor), now has a saddle and im going to get him back into regular work.(last ridden in may by previous owners). the previous owners used a ported wilkie snaffle but found it didn't give him enough brakes. owners before that used a grakle noseband and what looks like a pelham(in a pic of him jumping).i was thinking of putting him in a ported wilkie but wondered what the next best option would be if he's too strong in that.i was thinking a kimblewich with a port and a thinner bar as hes got a thick tongue but if i needed to use a flash noseband then i couldn't with any bit that had a curb chain. what would you suggest?

Sorry but I'm no help at all about bitting for brakes. Knight is all too glad to stop any time, so luckily I have power brakes!

If he has a thick tongue then a bit that is slimmer and poss a port- if his mouth has room for one, would help. Try contacting The Bit Bank for advice.
However, I think schooling is the best way forward with this kind of problem rather than stronger bitting. Is he on his forehand? Lots of transitions and getting him properly engaged may help.
