It looked like in one of your recent photos on Harvey that you have the Sprenger bow balance stirrups. Do they help your ankle be more confortable? My ankles are both deciding to play up so I'm on the lookout for ankle friendly stirrups. Are they reasonably light too? I tried the MCD stirrups but they were sooo heavy, made the saddle weigh a ton to carry out to the barn. So I'll be interested to see what you think of your stirrups.

Hi Nancy, yes I've been using these Sprenger stirrups lately, and also the polymer Thorowgood stirrups.
These Sprenger ones are considerabley lighter than the MCD ones and even the old sprenger version but are obviously heavier than the the polymer ones. I find both types are good for my ankle. In some ways I prefer the cheaper polymer ones but they don't come wide enough in the foot for safety. The Sprenger ones are clearly safer and also ankle friendly. Deffinately an improvement on earlier models.
Unfortunately I think it is a case of trying them out to see what suits. I can't make my mind up whether I'm better off with a rigid iron or a flexible one so i keep alternating!

Thanks so much for posting so quickly as I just scatched up a pair on ebay. So nice to get your comments first, before I bought yet more horse stuff that proves to not be quite how it sounded. But then the Sprenger bits & stirrups are usually all they say they are, and a price to match usually. I havent's tried the polymer ones yet, but my knees definitely favor the flexible irons. My ankles have just started being a nuisance so we hope they will agree with the knees on the same irons.

Have you seen the Thorowgood polymer stirrups with a wide tread? I bought a pair for the Bridle Ride and they are fab; they have a very wide base like endurance stirrups.

No Gill, but I 'll have to take a look at them, wide tread polymer stirrups do sound good. Must be light weight and I know those wide treads make a big difference to your feet on relaly long rides. Not to mention that they are probably in a reasonble price range, which would be nice.

The only Thorowgood polymer stirrrups I've seen are the ones I've got which have a wider tread than a standard iron but not nearly as wide as those big plastic endurance ones.

Mine are probably the same as yours Pam - I also have a normal width pair as well. Nancy they were £18.99 in my local country store, but I can't seem to find a link to any on the web. This is a pic of the wide and the normal (as Pam says not quite as wide as an endurance pair, but they do make a difference to me on longer rides).
