Odd, I felt the regular english girths were pretty easy to do for gradual tightening. Just set it on the last hole, go gradually, wait for pony to turn blue and let out some air (I swear some of those old mares I used to cinch up were amazing .....like some seal that had been reincarnated ), and go up the next hole.

I was told that they ensured the force was distributed equitibly between the two straps. No idea if that's right or not...

Yes, that would make sense. With normal girths, plain, elasticated or what ever, I can never get even pressure on both straps with Harvey's odd shape, even if I use different holes on the straps.

I use them on all my ridden ponies and have never had a problem.

I think the reason they can be overtightened is because the strap goes round the metal D thingy making it a pulley and as we all remember from our schooldays physics (groan) it exerts more force without more effort.
Also I think some ponies find the D thingy uncomfortable, especially on the dressage ones but I have to admit I have used them ages and like them for most of the reasons already mentioned.
