If you are having a driving pony on loan, you will need a groom to go out with you. From my personal experience, it can be very frustrating trying to find people to go with you.
Have you thought of contacting your local driving club, and perhaps volunteering to groom for someone at shows, rallies etc. You will learn a lot by watching, and hopefully they will be kind enough to let you have a drive as well.
Lessons are expensive, and obviously, the above should be free.
Such a shame you are not near us!!!

I would try advertising in the local driving club or with the BDS, at one point they had a board for whips to find grooms and helpers to find whips. Do you get Carriage Driving Magazine, they had a similar section for this.
Having said that, I have often groomed for people and it has driven me mad that they refuse to balance the vehicle properly, or don't even notice that it is not balanced or they put the reins over the dashboard into the carriage, then put their gloves on and then get into the carriage, just little things that i don't think are right but it is the way they have been doing it for years so they keep on doing it.
When we were starting we just read anything and everything we could get our hands on and slowly made each step forwards. I think with driving knowing why you are doing something is the key, why you never put to without the bridle, why you do up the traces first etc If you can think things through and understand it then you are learning the best way.
OO dear that all sounds a bit self righteous

You are more than welcome to come over again and come out with William and I. I know it is a bit of a drive for you but any time you want to come over just give me a ring and we can sort something out. Just a shame I am that little bit too far away !!

I am sure driving people would not mind you going out with them once a month, or whatever you could manage.
Our driving club work in conjunction with the local bridleways members, inviting them to driving days, when they are encouraged to ask questions, help harness up, or have a drive. We did one on Sunday with Molly, and we have another in two weeks. If your local driving club had such a scheme, I am sure you would find that helpful.

some good advice. there are a lot of people out there stuck for grooms. the one thing no one has said that as simple as it is longrienging your own pony a lot will keep you in 'touch' with her. That depends how fit you are yourself! Valerie.
