Has anyone got or tried a Zilco empathy collar??
Poor little Amy is starting to get her shoulders rubbed a bit now we are doing a bit more work and I was thinking of trying one of these to see if that helps. I probably need to add a swingle tree to Claire's cart as well to improve things!
So any views on empathy collars greatfully received!!
Many thanks.

Yep you need a swingle tree on your vehicle. Shame to let her rub her shoulders.

No serious damage done yet! Just a bit of ruffled fluff! Claire thinks there maybe a spare one at her mum's, so will check that out otherwise I will have to be nice to Steve again and see if he'll make me one! He keeps chuntering about getting it finished painted and when are we not going to use it at a weekend so it can be done! He hates unfinished jobs! LOL! He did put a foot brace (not sure of correct name!) on for me today as I have rather short legs! I still think an empathy collar might be good as Amy has lots of shoulder movement. Thanks for your wisdom again!

Best of luck with that! You sound like you are getting very keen!! Watch out you'll be buying a vehicle and off showing before you know it!! The South of England Carriage Fair is on the 11th of March at Ardingly show ground (not far from Gatwick). They are going to have displays and trade stands - it might be worth the trip if you are keen to look at new harness. I think it is organised by Brockham Harness Club.

Not sure if I can make it down there, I'll have to check if my passport's in date!! LOL!! It's also Reading Carriage sale in March!
Sprite's got a spare swingle tree so that will be posted to me. Then were off again.
I'll keep you posted. Luce

I tried an Empathy on Harley, but it was no where near big enough for him!! He has a Tedex one now.
The swingle tree should go a long way to solving your rubbing problems though

I spoke to some of the harness folk at the South of England Carriage Fair about the merits of Brollers versus empathy collars. The general consensus is that the Brollar will die out as it makes more sense to stick to using a full collar which should do a better job of spreading the load. The emapthy collar is getting rave reviews as it allows more expression and freedom in the shoulder - indeed I think I have to try one.

The swingle tree didn't appear for Claire's cart so we upgraded to a Croft marathon vehicle with a swingle tree. As Amy's got more room to swing her huge Dales' botty we get into trouble quicker but also out of it more easily AND we can turn on a sixpence! I'm going to see if I can get an empathy collar to try out, Cheers Luce

Sounds great I bet she is enjoying that! Four wheelers are the best although they take a bit of getting used to. The first one I used is my Swiss wagonette with it's very high box seat. I used to get in all sorts of muddles and regularly jackkniffe it! George, my very ancient and extremely experienced and very steady dales look a like used to test my skills. He would very slowly back up and jackkniffe the vehicle when bored and I would end up staring at no horse whilst desperately trying to gather vast quantities of rein. He would then get bored of waiting for me to sort myself out, give a big sigh and unravel the whole mess. I'm sure he was thinking (total amateur I will have to sort it out for her again!!!) LOL!

But at least he taught you LOADS by doing the jacknifing!!! What a sweetheart ~even if he put you in a pickle, he was willing to sort you out. Ponies like that are worth their weight in gold, especially for learning!
