Help needed asap please!! I've entered Amy in the driving class at Bakewell next Sun and haven't got a spares kit, nor do I know what should be in one! Can anyone tell me what the contents should be please? Thanks.

This is my spares roll on my excersise vehicle. It is a waterproof nylon tool roll. I used it when we did excersise classes but it just lives on the vehicle now all the time. It has in it, the two spanners that would be needed for any adjustment to my vehicle (a bellcrown), a punch (not at the moment !), pen knife, hoof pick, string, rein splice, spare emergency trace, bandage, small wallet containing a small note pad and pen and some change and my name and address, rope halter, candle and matches (because I had lamps on while doing driving classes, they are not required if no lamps) This is the spares kit I have in my dogcart for out private driving classes. It is a leather case with straps and brass buckles. It has in it, hoof pick, adjustable spanner, knife, spare breeching strap, rein splice, spare hame strap, spare trace, rope halter, leather punch, adjustable tool, leather lace, candle, bandage, matches, pen, note pad, coin, name and address.

Oh WOW!!! What great spares kits! I don't know how to explain our cart (cheap and cheerful off ebay!) it is a marathon vehicle made by Croft but the former owner took the single seat off and added a bench seat. It is tatty to be kind, and certainly NOT of showing potential, but we're going to have a go at Bakewell with absolutely no expectations (there are 3 in the class so we might come 3rd if we actually make it!). Here's our first go in the field this year, and our last as we've had riding lessons since not driving ones!! If you could give me a basic list that would suit this I'll buy you a pint one day!!!! I did a bridlework and box making course last year and would love to have a go at making a dog's doodahs kit (like yours) but probably not for next weekend! LOL! Many thanks for your reply. I went on the bds website but couldn't find a list nor on google searches! Trust DalesFans to come up trumps again!!

You are an exercise turnout so don’t want a private driving spares kit like my good one. You need something like my first one on my bellcrown. Keep it simple, either in a tool roll like mine or in a basket or box. As long as its all neat and well laid out and the judge can easily see what you have in there, not just everything all chucked in a bag, as I have heard that some turnouts have turned up at shows with.
It should have in it stuff like I have in mine, however as you don’t have lamps some of the things will not be required.
What I would have in a spares kit for your vehicle would be:
*Tools and spanners for any adjustments to your vehicle *Punch *Pen Knife *Hoof pick *String/Cord *bandage *note pad & pen *rope halter or head collar and lead rope *some change *mobile phone ? (We had that one suggested to us by judges) *preferably a spare rein or if you don’t have one put in a rein splice *spare trace *spare breeching strap
Do you have another set of harness that you can use parts of to put in your spares kit or even could you borrow the spare rein, trace and breeching strap from driving friends set of harness for the day ? It can be expensive getting a spares kit together if you only have the one set of harness and don’t have another set to use parts of to make up your spares kit. Just make sure that any spares that you have such as the trace and breeching strap and rein actually fit and could if needed be used on your turnout. Have heard of judges take out the spare trace and check that it would in fact fit and is the correct length.
Also make sure your groom has a sharp pen knife or retractable Stanley knife in there pocket, have known judges to ask and check that the groom has one in there pocket in case it was needed in an emergency.
Have you got your and your grooms outfits sorted as well ! Don’t forget you will need an apron as well.
Have a great day and enjoy ! Want lots of pics and report when you get back !

Thanks very much!! I have another harness (a posh leather set!) but have never tried it on Amy, so Claire thought it would be best to use what we know for a first time out. I can probably nick some bits from that though, I have some spare traces and reins as well. I don't have an apron but will get us some matching tops to wear. If I can find someone to take pics for us I'll gladly post some for everyone! Many thanks again!

You MUST have an apron of some sort, even if its just a blanket tucked round your legs. At the Scottish BDS show last year a friend was doing the excersise vehicle class and he had forgot his apron but we had a travelling rug in the car so we gave him that and he used that as an apron. When you are driving at a show you MUST have gloves, hat, whip and apron. The judge will say something if you dont. Here is me and my old pony sherry when we did were out in my excersise vehicle, my mum was my groom and wore cream trousers, shirt and tie and a hacking jacket and riding hat.

Noo Pros, only to glad to help.
Who is your judge, just in case I know them !
Also make sure you scrub and oil the underside of her front hoofs as some judges ask the groom to lift a front foot to check the condition of the feet and showing.

I've been thinking the exact same Zelda! Not only do I now know what's needed in a spare's kit, I can see different ones, and kaz has provided excellent photos to boot I'd no idea an apron was so necessary for the driving, and she's given so many good tips too Lucydales, best of luck for your show
