It was WONDERFUL!!!
A few weeks ago I stuck a post on the Scottish Carriage Driving website asking if there was anyone close to Inverness who could help me with Harley. 2 peoplle responded, and finally todayone of them came out for the afternoon.
The weather was gorgeous and we had a wonderful afternoon - she told me what was right and what was wrong (not much, amazingly!) and we long lined him in the field with her pulling the gig so he could see it etc, and she showed me it was better to have higher hands for long lining in preparation for driving - to get the straight line from the bit through the terrets to your hands.
Then we put him to and she drove him first - I have never seen him moving with the gig on and it was so lovely to see him working. He's such a mummy's boy he was worrying about me to begin with and watching me, but she got him to concentrate. Then I hopped on and drove him, with help with the reins. Much higher than I was holding them and it did make a difference. We did work with walk and halt and standing still and he got the hang of that by the end.
We did walk and trot and one bit of canter!!!!! She drove him faster than me but he enjoyed it very much and my grin was so big my face hurts!
It was just the best afternoon. We've done so much on our own but are now at the stage where we need a bit more guidance and to gain confidence - and this afternoon helped with both these.

Ooh, how wonderful! Well done to all of you. I know those can't wipe the smile off your face driving moments and they are priceless! Interesting about your hands. Can you get some pictures? Very well done!

That sounds to have been a wonderful day - no wonder you were grinning from ear to ear. It's great to hear that you're having some fun and some high points. What a good boy Harley is and LOL at him being Mummy's boy and looking for you.
I'd like to see some pics too if you can get some....

Sorry, there are no pics. I was too busy gawping at Harley being worked by someone else even to take any on my phone!! Hopeless. It was VERY difficult keeping the hands up and running at the same time! She has suggested I long line with the lines through the tugs to keep the line straight - rather than the terrets and either high hands on a bend in the rein.
You're right - it was just what I needed. Got my driving bug well and truly biting again. Yippee!!!
