Got my Hay analysis back

Well my hay results are back EEK bearing in mind that this is hay that was baled in 2005

Crude Protein 4.8 .................. 6-12
Oil % 1.4 ................. 1-3
Ash % 5.7 ..................3-9
ME (MJ/kg) 10 ..................8-10
Sugar % 10 ..................8-10
Starch % 2 ...................1-3
NDF % 74.4 ................50-65
Fermentable NDF% 34.5 .................20-30


Oh flippen heck I layed it all out so it would be easily read and the computer will not post it the way I layed it out

Ash % 5.8
ME 10.7
sugar% 10.8
starch %1.7
NDF% 70
Fermentable NDF% 34.3

So even higher than yours - worrying isn't it?

Am I right in assuming that both of yours fall in the normal range except for the sugar being at the high end and NDF- what does that mean - is it natural dietary fibre?

I think I will have to have my grass analysed!! Although I don't need to be told it is very rich

My letter was much the same except the protein was OK and the sugar and DE rather high - could do with out that!

Lucy - there was an article in Horse Magazine last month saying Dengie would do an analysis of your hay for £3. Seemed good value so I sent in a sample of our home made hay. My results show that my hay is rather higher in feed value than I realised considering it is old, traditional, meadow hay which hasn't been fertilised.

I'll get it for you tomorrow unless Zelda beats me to it. They asked you to send in a "supermarket bag sized sample. The cheque was to be made out to Dengie Crops and addressed to Horse Magazine. I got a very prompt reply.
