When you're chopping veg or fruit for you ponies, do you give them smaller or bigger chunks? I usually chop Blossom's apples into smaller chunks, as she often doesn't slow down to chew with apple. But today I'm going to mix n match the bigger chunks to see if she'll take a longer time chewing. What do you do for your ponies??

Since my friends horse (big horse so big gullet) choked on a small piece of turnip and nearly died, I always go for big chunks now so that they HAVE to chew it. I cut apples in half for the2 biugger horses, and quarters for the small mule and Jenny as she can't chew very well!! Just my personal preference though.

Like Jane, I worry about choke. I was always told to feed carrots whle or sliced lengthways, apples whole or halved and turnips/swedes etc whole.

Same as Pam and Jane for me.

I've always heard that small chunks can be problematic due to the risk of them getting caught in the gullet and subsequent choking, and have always fed mine larger chunks or carrots sliced in half lengthways.

Apples halved or quartered, carrots sliced lenghtways, and turnips/swede cut into thick slices (carrot sized) or whole

I quarter apples and feed carrots whole.

I feed carrots, apples and turnips whole. It takes them longer to eat and there is no worry of a small piece getting stuck causing them to choke.

I'd go for large chunks every time - especially if Blossom is wolfing her food (as they do....LOL). We cut apples in half or quarters, carrots lengthways and other stuff in big chunks or whole.

That it does Blossom doesn't seem to mind either way. I'll be trying her with a swede today to see what she makes of it ;D

I offered Quest a swede the other day and he chomped through it in seconds. I offered one to Harvey and he took a tiny nibble and decided it was horrible!

My old Highland mare used to play footie with whole turnips - if you threw them to her she'd boot them back at you!!

LOL....Blossom does the same with her Jolly ball and beach ball ;D Footie anyone? And...she says you're all wrong about the large chunks My goodness did she sulk over having such large pieces chucked into her breakfast bucket (we did large chunked quarters). Oh my! The bucket got tipped about in a huff.... Her Highness says that's not proper! She'd rather have them smaller please...which incidentally makes more 'apple' for her Spoilt?? ;D ~ never! Oh, and for the swede, she thought she liked it and took several good chunks out of it. I thought she might like it better if she could get ahold of it herself, so I dropped it atop her hay...no, interest fizzled because Mum wasn't holding it LOL I did let her 'get on' with that one, but she didn't bother looking at it again. So the jury's still out on the swede...
