My experience has been that you have to decide exactly what you want your camera for and go from there.
Originally I made the mistake of buying a camera with a huge optical zoom - it was brilliant for taking static shots - and the zoom was amazing. But it was hopeless for taking a shot of anything moving - the shutter lag was so long that all I got were horses bums, or rats tails as they disappeared out of shot. As an idea I would have to press the button the stride before take off to get a shot of a horse going over a jump.
I now have a camera with a relatively poor optical zoom, but a very quick shutter speed. The shots I now get are infinitely better, and it's much easier (not to mention lighter, smaller etc).
My mistake was to go in and get bamboozled by sales speak, without understanding what I really wanted to take pictures of.
My camera is a Fuji F31d (I think...)

I know nothing about cameras, but I got a Fuji F440 at Morrisons supermarket because my husband said it was a good buy!!! ( It was on offer last year) I am quite pleased with it. It is easy to use and the photos are OK.

I have a Canon Ixus 950SI and I am very pleased with it so far.
My last one, an Olympus do-everything-at-the-touch-of-an-idiot-button was disappointing.

I've got a Canon Powershot S3is, and a Canon Ixus 60 (for my handbag) and before I got the Canon powershot I had (still have) a Olympus c765, I like them all but the big Canon is more user friendly than the Olympus in my opinion ;D
Tom has a Fuji Finepix S5600

I've also got the Canon S3IS, it replaced my Olympus Camedia which was a good camera but the shutter lag was too great. I bought the Canon on the strength of it's reviews - it's very fast and more or less takes the pic as you see it, which is good for me as I take a lot of action shots. A long zoom is also a priority for me. The Canon has loads of good features and it's video is excellent.
On the downside however, I am rather disappointed with the picture quality, with the Canon they aren't as sharp as I'd like and if you use the action mode the pics come out very grainy. I may yet look into another camera!

I have a Ricoh which is nearly 3 years old and still as good as new. It was quite expensive when we bought it.
