Ooooo I can sympathise - I turned my ankle over once when I was leading Dan and my foot went down a hole! I thought I'd broken it as it came up in every colour under the sun, but it was only strained. Glad you are getting your doc to look at it!

Gill, to be fair i think i have only strained my ankle as well, but ooohhhh, doesn't it hurt. The wine helps a little, tonight, LOL. If i had broken something i am sure i wouldn't be able to walk on it at all.

I still think it might not hurt to have it xrayed for bone chips. I'm sat here wincing, and my right ankle's twinging in sympathy. Yep that's one severely sprained ankle at the bare minimum. The more you can keep it elevated, the better.

I would definitely go and get that x-rayed! I fell down some stairs in a nightclub last year (alright, I was very drunk!) and sprained my ankle - it looked very similar to that. At least if you get it X-rayed you will have the reassurance that it IS just a sprain (and if it's something more then you can get some help with it) - they'll give you a tubigrip as well. I would definitely recommend getting a tubigrip in any case; it really helped me when I hurt my ankle! Plus lots of ice and elevation!

Ouch!!!!!!! Having had many sprained ankles over the years I really do advise you to get it checked out and not ignore it as I did - now have arthritis in the joints. It is jolly painful isn't it and a sprain can take as long, if not longer, to heal than a break. Keep it elevated as much as pos and don't do too much on it - be guided by the pain. Ice initially and then contrast baths if you can manage it. You have my sympathies!

Thanks everyone, and it is painful that is for sure. My instructor took out Sparky out for me as it seems a shame to let his fitness drop, whilst i can't ride for a few weeks. Anyhow he was a very happy boy today after going out and he was raring for a good canter to get it out of his system.
The doctor has had a look, she thinks it is a sprain and told me to keep it up, be very careful what sort of ground i walk on, so i don't go over and put more strain on the ligaments.
Thanks again everyone

When I got the spectacular sprain that resulted in a bone chip, the ER slapped me in a cast saying I could remove it in two days time, then go to the doctor. Yep, two days later I was sitting up and unwrapping that puppy. When I went to the doctor, she was horrified and wanted to know where my cast was. Binned. She wanted to send me promptly to the ER to get it recast, and I point blank refused. Well, she could have recast it, but I was going to unwrap it as soon as I could. My ankle was far too swollen to be shoved into something so unforgiving. We compromised, and she gave me this instead www.betterbraces.com/ViewProducts/AircastAir-StirrupAnkleBrace/165.aspx Its brilliant!!! Its inflatable, so you can lower or increase the amount of air needed to accomodate the swelling. Its comfortable, removeable for showers, and best of all, the hard outer plastic gives the ankle the stability needed to prevent reinjury. This was especially critical as you try to get back to normal. I've also worn the compression braces, and those do very well, but wait a bit before you put a compression brace on that ankle. Wait at least a week after the initial injury. And I wouldn't be doing anything more than icing for the first week to ten days. Sure hope they've given you some decent pain meds

I hope it settles soon for you. I'm still having problems from last summer when I twisted my anke, so make sure your doctor is thorough when she/he checks it for you.
