Does anyone know anything about either of these. Rachaels hamster died the other day and as it is her birthday on wed I was thinking of getting her some degus but I am not sure if a chin might be more suitable. I know not an awful lot about either to be honest

Chins are REALLY hard work - and they have a habit of just keeling over dead, they have notouriously weak hearts apparently.
Degus look great fun but need a large all metal cage as they will chew everything else to smithereens. I believe with both chins and degus they need to be kept in minimum same sex pairs.
Both also have to have ABSOLUTELY no sugar in their diet - even down to being very limted to what fruits they can have.
I have got the contact details of a good rescue centre in Surrey who always have chins and degus in, and getting them to you can normally happen via a chin/degu chain (I spent Saturday getting a ferret from Surrey to Wrexham to his new home). However they will ask you to jump through the normal rescue hoops to show you know enough about them to offer a good home.

My sister had chins, and we did not have many problems. We did have three in a very large hand made cage but had to take one out as the other two were bullying. We then seperated them in a large cage each. Diet is pretty basic, but a surpose that could make it easier to feed them. One of ours was white with red eyes, and we had a probs with his eyes, had to have a couple of operations. Cant say about degu as not had any, but we enjoyed the chins.
