Can anyone recommend a good saddle bag for picnic rides etc. At the moment I am using a rucksack style bag without the straps and attaching it to the D rings at the back of my saddle using a dressage strap. It's not really ideal as it is all bunched up and hard to unzip. Would prefer something made for the job. I need a bag to carry food, camera, phone etc. Any endurance people out there?

I've got a cheapie Shires saddle bag which is very roomy but the tops are zipped, and they are a bit fiddly to do with one hand. When I went on Freerein holidays years ago they had some good saddle bags which had clips rather than zips, and were much easier to undo and do up - I'll try and find out where they get them from. This company also do them (think Linda has one?): www.performance-equestrian.com/html/cat020100x.html

I would get one small enough to put some money in, leave the head collers on, put the lead rope around the ponies neck and head to the pub for lunch, LOL. Sorry, that is of no help really is it!!!!, LOL

I got a fab saddle bag - it is an English Stowaway Saddle Pack from Performance Equestrian. It fits over the cantle and the panels, with straps that go round the girth straps. It has 1 big pocket, comes with 2 x 500 ml water bottles and pockets for them, 1 small pocket for phone, folding hoof pick etc and 2 long narrow pockets under the bottles for other bits and bobs. it also has adjustable 'tie-down' straps for holding items outwith the bag - such as a jacket/waterproof trousers. I have had it on for 2 longish fast rides and now I've got the girth straps tight enough it never moves - doesn't jolt up and down or anything. It was £45 but I think it is well worth it. Here's a link to the page - they have lots of other bags too. www.performance-equestrian.com/html/cat020100x.htmlDOH!! Edited to say I didn't see Gill had put the link on already!!

Saddle bags look good but don't put your phone in them 'cos if you fall off your horse can disppear off with your only means of communication! Even if pony only goes as far as the next blade of grass it can be a long way if you have a broken ankle.

OMG you are quite right! And I have been merrily riding along with my phone attached to my saddle. Which also disappears with the horse if you fall off.....
Thank you, you have made me think and I will wear it on my arm or in a pocket.

LOL Jane - you're not alone. I've got one of those phone holder things and I strap it to my leg if I haven't got a suitable pocket. I just pray I don't fall off onto the phone and break it - I suppose it's always a risk. I also got myself a very lightweight gilet to wear in the summer so that I have pockets for phone and stuff.

For some reason I find those phone strap things uncomfortable to wear round my arm or leg so I use a very small "bumbag" which I wear with the bag bit in front of me for my phone.

I little bum bag is a good idea Pam - just big enough for a phone and some lip balm etc. Mine bumbag is HUGE! Might invest in a little one this week....

Just a warning about using a bumbag in front! I had a small camera in mine, leaned forward to brush a horsefly off my horse's shoulder and crushed the bag between me and the pommel - the camera broke!!

Ouch! That sounds painful! I only carry tiny things like my mobile phone in my front bum bag for just that reason. I figured that would be the safest place in the event of a fall and couldn't do much damage in the saddle. Not sure where I would carry a camera.

I got a tiny bag, it's for your cash and phone and has a long shoulder strap that is long enough to go round the waist. I strung my phone strap round the waist strap so I couldn't drop it, and also strung the camera case on it as well. Worked for 100 miles!!
And the Performance Equestrian cantle bag (see above post) was fantastic - never moved, never rubbed and more to the point, never LEAKED!

My new saddlebag arrived yesterday from Performance Equestrian - its lovely.....purple!! It looks to be really well make and I like the way it fits on the saddle (sleeve over the cantle and straps to attach to the girth to stop bounce). It also has a fleecy lining to stop it rubbing the saddle and the horse - what a good idea (I was worried about it marking Gill's beautiful saddle LOL) I'm going to try it on Bea at the weekend to see what he makes of it because although I'll be using it on Saturn for my hols, I hope to be able to use it for longer rides at home.
I have to say that I was very, VERY impressed with the service from the company - and I spoke to them yesterday to enquire about another product and they were very friendly and helpful.

I ordered mine from them yesterday Sue so I'm really pleased to hear your positive vote for them. I told Joe last night that I had bought my joint birthday/Christmas present from him a bit early so he didn't need to worry about it in December! LOL! Thankfully he was ok about it!
