A bit confused now as to when Molly should be scanned. As Emperor was interested in her again on her second cycle, do I wait three weeks from then, and assume he did not cover her the first time round? As Molly gets very stressed round vets, I do not want to be having too many vet visits, and getting her wound up unnecessarily.

Was she covered more than once? Was it an in hand cover or pasture cover?

Mair,
I'm not really sure, but I think I'd run it past your vet and see what they suggest.
I've jotted down that a first scan can be done 18-21 days after last covering, and that a second scan can be done 25-35 days after last covering.
From memory, the first scan just shows the presence of a follicle, whereas the second scan should reveal a heartbeat (with Max it was just one pixel flashing on and off on the computer screen at 28 days).
The next option, I think, is a pregnancy test using the jugular vein blood which can be done at 45-90 days, but that will only serve to confirm the pregnancy, but won't confirm whether it is a single foal or twins.
Will be interested to hear what you decide to go with.

Hmmm, if emporor is interested in her again she could be in season again and has gone over/not caught on her first set of coverings.
Does she tease to him or squirt or anything, or does she smell? Has she changed her behaviour...most mares not in season will firmly tell a stallion to get lost if he tries to show interest but they will stand like angels if they are in season). Sometimes a stallion will jsut try his luck and be interested but a mare will soon put him right if she is not in season.
We don't scan ours if they come round again in season as it means usually there is no foal there. Rather we go through the whole thing again and do the covering then wait to see if they come round again in three weeks time. I guess we just do one scan about 25 days. We wait to see if they come round again before spending the money. You can still pinch out twins at that stage.

Molly was running out with Emperor. She came in season as soon as she saw him, and when I visited later in the week, there were obvious signs that he had covered her. I left her there 4 weeks, and was told that Emperor was hanging round her, although Molly was not squirting, or showing as if she was actually in season again, although that does not mean she wasn't.
Last time, she did not come back in season, so I had the scan done. But I am now wondering whether she was not covered until the second season - which was last weekend. She had a scan, and two blood tests last year, and it cost me a fortune,so I really only want to do it once!!
Thanks for your help. I think I will speak to the vet and see what he says.
