Looks like Olivia probably won't be having a foal after all She has been very difficult with Chieftain, trying to double barrell him every time he mounts her. Strange thing is she squats for him, and even backs up - but as soon as he goes to mount her, wham! Poor Chieftain has been so good and I am just glad he wasn't injured. Lorraine has tried everything but nothing has worked and she has had to admit defeat - for the first time! Typically it would be Olivia So the unwilling mare will be returning home next week, it's such a shame as I know she'd be a lovely mum

Oh what a shame Gill , I wonder if that was what happened last year with Leia, no wonder Dales are so thin on the ground if the girl won't co-operate with the boys

What a shame. Does it make any difference if she's held or running loose? Some mares have a preference! Briagh is a pain she doesn't kick but stands til the last moment then swings her back end away and the stallion gets fed up and gives up - unless she's held in which case she stands. Makes her easier to keep as a broodmare with a foal at foot though as I can put her in with my stallion and other broodmares despite her being his mum - he won't even look at her now! This year she's yeld and should have gone away but it all fell through wioth a local breeder and I have no transport to go to the usual one that knows her so he advertised the stallion for loan/sale so who knows when she'll have a foalie again...
Modified to wonder if AI is allowed by DPS as that might be worth pursuing if it is?

I am sorry to hear this Gill. How can Olivia not want to be a good girl for Chieftain - I am sure most mares would be more than happy to oblige for him lol!!
I suppose AI is worth considering, although there is probably not that many Dales stallions to choose from if you do this, is there.
Maybe you could have another try next year - she may be more receptive then.

Gill
Is it worth having a chat with the vet about giving a prostaglandin injection to help bring her into season more fully? From what I've heard, and having seen just one mare who was given the injection, it can bring on an incredibly "desperate" season! Can't think how to desribe it other than that, but the mares can be virtually queuring up to be brought in to see the stallion!

Sarah she had been given the injection, and even sedated for the deed!! Mind you I am not entirely surprised, as Olivia is a very complex character. I may give AI a thought but it's something I'd have to research thoroughly and as stated there are not a huge number of stallion owners offering this, plus the not insubstantial cost of it!
Cherry would certainly be more accommodating but I'm not sure of my plans for her yet.

Oh bummer! Can't think of too many more options - except AI (but like you say, there's a lot to be weighed up with that) or a different stallion..... but it's difficult, isn't it.

Ahh what a shame Gill
If you have another mare in season, and a willing vet. You can cover the other mare, scoop some of the stuff out, mix it up with extender and put into the difficult mare. A crude form of AI using fresh and any stallion can do it. It might be another option anyway?

That's a shame. Re the injection though, Dee had it last Tuesday, took her back to the stallion and by Friday tea time she was ready to be covered and stood for him. I collected her yesterday and she stood again for him for the 4 th time. The vet did say it may bring her into season in 3 days but it may take 7 to 10 days. Was Olivia there for as long as that? Was she fully in season? Squirting white discharge? Just a thought although I'm sure you were told the same by your vet. Maybe she didn't fancy him and needs another boy! Hope you can sort something out for her though, breeding isn't easy is it.

Oh that is a shame, Gill. Poppy was exactly the same although she was 14 and rather set in her ways. I would dearly have loved a foal from Pops but we didn't try again with her. My other girls, Star, Mina and Freya were all the opposite LOL! Perhaps Olivia will be more receptive to another stallion some time. I know you must be really disappointed.
