Anna
that's really interesting. I'd never thought of that as an option....... but I guess it guarantees that the semen is fresh, doesn't it!

ROFL Extremely fresh Its a good way for difficult mares; it just relies on having the two mares in season and on the right days (its pointless AIing the difficult mare on day 1 of the season if her season is 5 days long as the egg is released day 4/5 and all semen will have died by then and sometimes mares won't cover on day 1/2 even the good ones). We managed to do it once with a very amenable mare covering her on day 1 and catching the difficult one on day 5 but its not ideal.

Just to add further that some vets (i know ours can but he is extremely good with us and our mares) can store then semen retrieved chilled for 3/4 days until the difficult mare is right to cover (scanning follicles etc). Thats a bit more complex and more added expense, but still nothing like frozen semen will be.

Have you tried her with a different stallion? Molly hates Heather and actually attacks him, but when she went to Joshua she was fine, she also was fine with my old stallion - but its not just Heather she hates,
And after all why should she do the deed with someone she dosnt fancy?

Any more news, Gill. Is Olivia home now? Did Chieftan manage to cover her at all?
Hope all OK. x

It would be worth trying a different stallion Gill. We had the same problem one year when we took Diamond to a stallion other than William. She hated him even though she was bang in season. Three weeks later we took her to yet another one and she stood no trouble at all. I would start early next year and have a couple of different stallions lined up as it is getting quite late now. Hormones are more rampant earlier in the year. That is why seasons are often longer in May than later months. Best of luck.

Sometimes things can change the next year. My Fell pony mare was so bad to breed as a maiden 3 year old that she ended up being mentioned (not by name!!) by 2 breeders in Hoofprints in Eden . Next year we put her out with our young stallion and she stood for him. We have a lovely filly from that breeding!!
Maybe she fancied him? Maybe she was just a bit more mature?? Who knows?

There is a stallion quite near to me that I might look into for next year - then if things don't work out again, I haven't got a million miles to go transporting her to and fro! Doesn't help that she isn't a great loader Lorraine did ask her vet about the 'fresh' semen, he said it could be done but it was a case of diverting the semen into an artifial vagina (don't ask me how they do that!!!) - and the whole process a bit hit and miss. Plus the stallion has to be compliant to the procedure!

Ooh blimey, he does it the complex way using a dummy mare. That would involve going to the AI centre etc, like I said we just use a compliant mare and scoop it out before it passes into the cervix, much easier but it does depend on the willingness of your vet.
Well fingers crossed this new stallion works.

I think that you might mean using an AV (artificial vagina). I've seen one used and basically someones job is to hold the AV and divert the penis of the stallion into it as he mounts. Timing is pretty important! The semen is then just collected into a bottle at the other end, but as with the method Anna describes you are still relying on Olivia and another mare being in season at the same time.
It's a shame to hear that things haven't worked out with Olivia, and I hope that if you try again next year she might fancy the stallion a bit more!

What a shame. Maybe she would fancy the other stallion. Or just not into the deed itself and AI would be the best option. Anne If not flowers?
