The vet came out today to do some vaccinations, and to scan Dora (at day 27 after last covering) to see whether she had any little secret following her visit to Hurricane recently. Was really trying not to build my hopes up too much, and it seemed to take ages to do the scan..... when all of a sudden, look who popped up on screen! So this one is Dorita/Dorito: Apparently it's a good size for its age, which is great! Edited to say: And this one was Max at the same number of days after covering: Do you remember before Megz's foal (Max) was born, I used to refer to him/her as "Minimegz"? Well, seeing as this one is "little Dora" I've decided to call him/her Dorita ...... just as a working name until (hopefully) he/she's born. So, Dorita makes her first public appearance on Dalesfans! In case you're not too sure just WHICH bit of the picture is Dorita....... well, he/she is the white blob at the bottom of the dark egg shaped blob! I know there's a long way to go yet, but keeping everything crossed that Dora and Dorita stay in good health over the coming months. Sarah

Brilliant news, I hope all goes well for you all! That must of been a great bit of news for you. Was that the first scan or was she scanned early on? I know where I am there are 2 schools of thought on scanning, 1, scan at 14 - 17 days and if twins pinch out one of them. Then scan again 10 days later for heart beat. 2, scan around 28 days and if twins abort both, if one then you should have a heart beat and later a foal In both instances if you have a foal, scan again at about 4-5 months just to make sure and to make sure you don't feed too much! Just interested in what others are advised. A big congratulations though!

Thanks everyone. Dora LOVES foalies, so I'm sure she's very pleased about the whole deal! She "adopted" Fluff and Rose when they both arrived as weanlings and was so kind and gentle with them. Have seen her as a mum a couple of times before, when a friend owned her, and I've never seen her look as happy as when she had her newborn foal running around alongside her. ....... Like I say, fingers well and truly crossed.
Barbara, I think everyone has different ideas about whether or not to scan, what dates to scan and how many times to scan, if at all. For me, I just felt happy with the idea of going for a single scan at around 27-35 days. My vet did mention that they tend to do a lot of scans at 16 days, followed by another at 27ish, then another at 42 days or so. He said it is very common to detect a foal at 16 days, but find it gone at the second scan. Much less usual to have it go missing after the 2nd scan, and if it's still there at a third scan, there's a very good chance of it going full term.
I guess I'll just see how things go, but unless there are any particular concerns, I don't plan on scanning again. Feedwise, I'll keep a good eye on Dora's condition, but if she's anything like Megz, I probably won't need to up her feed til after the birth.
I'm allowing myself a few days of being excited about the scan, then I'll no doubt start the 10 more months of stressing about things before a foal is born, and then however many months of stressing after the birth!!! I know it felt like a looooooonnnnnggggg wait with Megz!!!

Yes all have different ideas about scanning, when, how many etc etc, especially the vets who suggest many! I just wondered what you had been advised in the past regarding scanning early, around (17 days) to see if it was twins. You enjoy your few days of being excited.
