Colours of Ancestors?

Following on from Debbie's thread about colours, and the fact that Harley is baying out, I was wondering how I can find out the colours of any of Harley's ancestors?
I know they will be in the stud books, but is there another way?

Do you think he could be 'bleaching' from the conditioning for the endurance rides?

From the other thread, as he started out 'black' I would think that his parents would almost had to have been black as well, since it seem such the recessive gene.
